alcohol thins your blood, so you are more apt to bleed

however, i hear that marijuana (seriously) dulls the pain without causing bleeding issues; since i don't smoke it, and i didn't try to mask any pain with anything when i got a tattoo, i can't verify that claim. if i were going to try it though, i'd mix it into food rather than smoking (smoking does your lungs no favor regardless of WHAT you are smoking).

The Reason for this is that Alcohol, just like Aspirin, and other Pain medications thins your blood, therefore making you bleed easier. The more you bleed, the more ink you bleed out, therefore the ink will not take too easily to your skin. I have a Family friend who does Tattoo work and that is what he told me. A common misconception for people is that if they get "loaded" or take pain medication before the tattoo, it will help with the pain, the reality is, that it only makes it worse becasue the tattoo artist has to do 2 or 3 times the work to make sure the ink will hold.

No, the reason you should not drink alcohol before getting a tattoo is because, 1)poor judgement in a situation where ones mistake will be worn for the rest of his life (thinking a tattoo is cool and winding up regreting it later) and alcohol thins the blood, creating more blood loss than normal and tattooist takes longer trying to clean blood up causing more pain.

You shouldn't drink alcohol before getting tattooed for a couple reasons. One is that a responsible tattoo artist will not do a tatto on someone who smells of liquor. Alcohol thins your blood and you will bleed more, and there is also the fact that you might regret it in the morning.

You probably heard wrong. If you're determined to get a tattoo, the tattoo process is virtually painless. Since tattoo artists' career is to tattoo, I'm sure they can handle the pain easily. Results won't be ruined if you bleed more, it just becomes more of a pain for the tattoo artist to work with excessive blood. But there are a lot of artists that don't deal with drunks anyways.

You won't bleed to death, but alcohol thins the blood and you bleed easier. When you bleed, the ink comes with it. Then you have to get more touch ups, which means more money and more pain. Don't get tattooed with a hangover either, you'll have similar results.

Never heard that, but everywhere that I've been they have a rule about being intoxicated, I assume just so that you don't regret it later.

The first place I heard this was in New Orleans. Now tell me, how many people go to a tattoo parlor in New Orleans that haven't been drinking.

I've also heard this in Mexico. I don't think it's a strict ordinance, but it is supposed to be a law in most states and countries.
