I am making mashed potatoes and started peeling some baking potatoes I bought at whole foods. It has brown spots throughout the potato and the middle has a whole in it, with a brownish color and white looking spore things. Maybe this is what potatoes should look like? I always make rice or beans, but my bf wants mashed potatoes. I don't want to die on Valentines day..any potato knowledge is welcomed! Thanks!

THROW THEM AWAY. They should be ivory and there should not be any spores, that is mold. How long have you had them? I wouldn't eat them, if it was like one part brown I would say cut it out but that sounds bad.

I am also growing potatoes for the first time, and this is what I have been told. The rotten one is probably your original seed potato. You do not dig any potatoes until they have been growing about 4 months. When cooler weather arrives the leaves will wither, then the potatoes are ready to be gently dug up. Leaving them in the ground is fine until first hard frost, they should be out before that. As a bonus if you plant sweet potatoes they will return year after year, something I am looking forward to!. Hope this helped and good luck with your garden.

They are bad. Potatoes should be white, creamy or pale yellow, depending on what type you buy. The best way to make sure you get good potatoes is to buy them in a paper bag or loose, no plastic bags and (I know this sounds weird, but it's foolproof) smell them. You should not smell anything but the earthy smell you get in a garden when you first turn the soil. Unpeeled potatoes have no smell.

Umm. if it has a hole through it, then it's spoiled. It's not supposed to be brownish. The "meat" is supposed to be a creamy whitish shade. Whole foods spoil waaay faster than regular foods because they are not grown or preserved with pesticides or preservatives, so don't buy whole foods in bulk unless u plan on eating them within a day or 2.

Here's some good advice -

"When in doubt, throw it out."

Better to be safe (and remain healthy) than sorry.

I don't think I would waste my time cooking them. Throw them out.
