The answer's Chaturingmes or worms. Thing is every time I see the question come up on Y!A there's always three underscores between the T and I when there should only be two. Maybe it's another worm pretending to be an underscore? Sneaky buggers they are.
Edit: To Neutron: Actually, I'm not sure if even biologists call them that. I've only ever seen the word crop up on Yahoo Answers and nowhere else. I'm beginning to think that someone just made it up as an answer once and everyone who kept using it since then just found it by Googling the old answers on Yahoo. Urban myth in the making?

So, basically... The hint actually makes the riddle HARDER because it's much easier to think the answer is worms, but not when the so called "hint" is _H_T_ _ _ I _ _ M E_, because what the _U_ K is a Chaturingmes?! Who refers to worms as that, besides for biologists?!
