I do tai chi and it does alot for you in ways that are not describable. Just know that I couldnt live without knowing how to use my chi now that I have lived knowing how. Here are some ways that chi can be used.
1. to react quicker
2. to move faster
3. to hit harder
4. to sense your surroundings
5. improve balance/flexibility
6. improve endurance.
7. to focus better
8.to rest better
9. to heal quicker
10. to feel others energy
11. to project energy onto others
I would definately give tai chi a shot. At first you'll feel like an idiot doing all the weird motions but gradually you will understand and youll be glad you tried it.
O ya and it does have self defense stuff. Its movements are slow but as you learn to speed them up you learn their applications which are extremely effective/lethal

I study Zhao Bao Tai Chi under Sifu Wen Peng at the Omei Kung Fu Academy in Milpitas, Ca. It has helped me out tremendously health and conscious wise. Our classes consis of three things we do during the week.
1) Actual form exercises (which there are 3, 24 form, 43 form, and 72 form)
2) Tai Chi Push Hand
3) Tai Chi grappling
The grappling is the funner part for me as I used to be a Pro wrestler and it allows me to toss people around again

depends on your teacher and the approach he takes to it.
There is legit combat oriented tai chi. Unfortunately the vast majoirty of it is the "old folks in the park" stuff making it hard to find a real teacher outside a large urban area.
find a combat oriented class that actually has serious minded people who aren't doing it for "just health" or "spirituality" or to "increase your chi". or some other nonsense. If the primary purpose of the class isn't to learn to fight, then chances are you stumbled on an "old folks gallery".
Also, if they only teach you to "go slow and you will develop chi" then they arent' teaching you anything. yes, there are times you want to be "easy" and go slow, however the point of tai chi is to not meet force with force in the opposite direction, you use force in another direction.

Yes, Taiji is good. It is a triad system based on health, self-defense and "meditation in motion."
The slowness develops precision and endurance.
Taiji is an internal martial art. The whole system is different due to the fact that it is based on relaxation and only using the muscles necessary to make the move rather than tension throughout the entire body. This relaxation of the body also releases tension in the mind (that's the "meditation" part.)

Taichi is profound, a martial art's system that requires many many years in order to practice. is it an effective martial arts system? it sure is, but until you truly understands it. mas oyama, a legendary karate master revealed in his biography that the only one time that he lost during his undefeated challenge against all martial artists across the world (270 of them) from any styles was against an "old frail man" in his 80's who practiced taichi in china. mas was the kind of people that can chop off horns of raging bulls against him with his bare hands. the "old frail man" was able to reflect all forces back onto mas and mas lost eventually due to fatigue while the old man seems to be able to keep going, never got tired.
taichi should be something you want to take on as an artform for a very longtime. if you're looking for good system for self defence that you can learn quickly, don't recommend taichi. it takes many years to be good at taichi as some of the principles can be quite hard to grasp. but it doesn't hurt practicing taichi since it teaches chi balance, also calms the mind and relieves stress, and improves body coordination especially after you're 35 years old you will see the health benefit it brings.

Tai Chi is using opponent strength and reflect it back to the opponent! In another word for Tai Chi is reverse energy by controling opponent energy! Tai Chi is good for you cause the practise make you breath smoothly!

The weirdest effect this martial art has is called rooting, basically multiple people would have trouble pushing him off his feet, it takes many years to learn this technique. It is said someone who has mastered rooting can walk strait up a tree but maybe this is just a mith, who knows.

if your worried about tai chi because of the meditation and what seem to be 'dances' as some might say, forget that part the martial art itself is very good as it is one of the most adapted, oldest and interesting martials. (not forgeting excessive use of swords :D)

exellent. it is spelt tai chi and originates in China. this is exellent, not so much for combat, but is great for mental exercises and to focus chi. If you prefer more physical styles try Shaolin Kung Fu, its great.
