I am getting a American Bulldog this weekend, and I was wondering if they are big barkers. Any other personality traits would be great!

any dog can be a barker. i would say you need to research this breed extensivly before getting the pup. these are great dogs, but are not for the first time dog owner. a dog that is healthy, well exercised and well cared for tends not to bark constantly. any dog will bark, but if they are not bored or lonely they tend not to. these are very intelligent dogs that love their person. they are not meant to be outdoor dogs. they must be a part of the family. they are strong willed and need to be told their place in the home or they will run it. they are very strong and muscular and will easily walk you by 4-5 months of age if not properly introduced to a collar and leash and taught how to walk on it properly. go to american bulldog websites and read all you can about the breed. get a crate, either 2 different sizes at least, or one that can be divided into smaller sizes as the dog grows. a crate is a great way to potty train the pup, and a safe place to leave the pup when you cannot directly observe them, to keep them and your home safe. they will cry at first, but if left during the times the family is around with the door open and the dog is encouraged to go in there, they will find this to be a place of comfort. never use a crate for punishment, and give plenty of exercise to compensate for time in the crate. keep this pup up to date on vaccines reccomended by your vet, not the breeder. these dogs tend to be more suseptable to diseases like parvo and distemper than some other breeds. make sure the parents have been temperment tested and OFA registered as good or excellent. these guys can have hip and elbow displasia that will run in the lines. you should be able to see where the pup was raised and at least one parent, if you can't, this is not the breeder you want to buy from. have collar, leash, toys, premuim food, and a crate ready to go as soon as the new pup gets home. have a schedule for the pup, this will help the pup adjust easier to it's new home. this dog will need to be mentally stimulated. enroll the pup in a training class as soon as it is old enough, and you can also look into agility and other sports after you have good control of the dog. these guys thrive on activity and stimulation from their owners and mentally. beautiful dogs, but can be dangerous in inexperienced hands. good luck to you, hope you have made the right choice.

I once had an elderly lady for a friend. She had a wonderful little dog. A mix of some sort. She had the dog trained well and it behaved very well. Learn here https://tr.im/liHoN

She kept an uncovered candy dish on her coffee table with candy in it. The dog was forbidden to eat the candy. When she was in the room observing the dog he did not even appear to notice the candy. One day while she was in her dinning room she happened to look in a mirror and could see her dog in the living room. He did not know he was being watched. For several minutes he was sitting in front of the candy bowl staring at the candy. Finally he reached in and took one. He placed it on the table and stared at it, he woofed at it. He stared some more, licked his chops and PUT IT BACK in the bowl and walked away. Did he want the candy, oh yeah. Did he eat it? Nope. They can be trained that well but most, I'll admit, are not trained that well. When I was a young boy, maybe 5 years old. We had a german shepherd. He was very well trained also. My mom could leave food unattended on the table, no problem. She would open the oven door and set a pan roast beef or roast chicken on the door to cool. No problem. He would not touch it, watched or not. But butter? Whole other story. You leave a stick of butter anywhere he could reach and it was gone. He was a large shepherd so there were not many places he could not reach. Really, I think the number of dogs trained to the point they will leave food alone when not being supervised is very small indeed.
.
Now if we are talking obedience training, not food grubbing, that is a different story. Way back when I was first learning obedience training one of the final exercises was to put our dogs in a down/stay and not only leave the room but leave the building for 15 minutes. The only person that stayed was our trainer, not the owners. Most of the dogs in my class did not break their stay, which would be an automatic fail. I'm happy to report my dog was one of the ones that passed.

I am SO jealous. I am in love with American Bulldogs, but my appartment doesn't allow them, they say they are pit bulls. Every American Bulldog i have ever met has been such a big sweet goof. They are very friendly, and have cute silly personalities. I have not known any that are excessive barkers, but i guess any dog of any breed could be an excessive barker. But I love them, and I think you will be very happy with an American Bulldog!

It doesn't say anything about barking, and I have no idea myself, but I've found this site to be one of the best when researching breeds.
