Yeah I've asked this question before, from where should society derive it's moral authority. You're not going to get many thoughtful answers.

The truth is, we cannot rely on *any* human source to get moral authority, because those sources are in and of themselves corrupt. The only reliable and unchangeable source is God.

EDIT- Ah, it's nice to see an Atheist ADMIT that God has written His laws upon our hearts, three cheers prophet enslavement!

Morals come from the hearts and minds of people, not books.

Personally I'd much rather follow the Nine Noble Virtues then the Ten commandments.

Most of the world did not acquire their morals from the Ten Commandants

moses got an e-mail from god with no return address on it. in that e-mail he got the 10 commandments. The bad news or good news depending on how you see it, it was actually 20 commandments, but there was error in the network connections (it was wireless you know) and it hadn't been tested yet.

Not this again....... Most of us are born with something called a "conscience", this "conscience" springs out of natural feelings for your fellow humans, and not wanting them to suffer, because one is able to understand that they would not want to suffer themselves. If you need a 2000 year old book to tell you that killing is wrong, you are what is called a "sociopath", and need to be medicated to reduce the risk that you'll harm someone.

i can't understand your question. darwinists have plenty of ideas about where morality came from. probably that when we were in the wild, it benefitted us greatly to have other people watching our backs. we protected people we thought would help us, and were hostile to everyone else. this continues today with tribal, ethnic, racial, religious, political conflicts. duh.

I take them as guidelines, not rules. Then again, I'm Gnostic.
