By you: DON'T DO IT!
Let your dentist do it.

Definitely go see a dental surgeon. I had impacted wisdom teeth (i.e. growing sideways under the gum) and the surgeon warned that it was really close to a nerve or even touching. If the wisdom tooth ever had problems, it could infect the nerve and you'd be in serious pain. When doing my surgery, he did warn me that since it is so close to the nerve, or even touching, I could lose feeling in my lip. There's a small chance it could be permanent but most likely, feeling will come back. But a surgeon can't ever be sure till they go in. Thankfully mine went well and he said he didn't touch the nerve when taking the tooth out.

OK, there is no way to avoid the nerve cause the nerve is inside the root itself. Duh!
