I would highly recommend that you look up the breeds from the "American Kennel Club", because those are totally different breeds. The Golden Retriever belongs to the Sporting Group and likes to get exercised allot. The Chihuahua belongs to the Toy Group and has a terrier like temperament. You have to devote more time on grooming with the Golden Retriever than the Chihuahua.
It is better to do the homework now, then being disappointed later.

HI
I dont have a lot of expierience with the chihahua's,but I have worked with a few golden retrievers - I would definatly go with the golden - they are a wonderful family dog - very eager to please, and there temperment is wonderful.
I just bought one for my grandson who is 1 1/2 yrs old. My daughter wanted a dog to grow up with her son - so I went right to the golden retriever.
The chihahua's can be nice dogs, but they are well known to be barky little creatures and also known to be snippy.
I hope this helps. Just remember when choosing a shelter or rescue dog - these guys are there for a reason - and the reasons may not always be disclosed to you. You need to have a lot of patience with a shelter animal - I would definatly buy a crate and a blanket so that can be his/her area, and I would definatly sign up for some dog training classes.
The crate will be his/her bed A safe place for him to go when he's feeling overwhelmed because it will take him some time to get used to his surroundings, and the crate will be like a security area for him.
Dog training will go along ways for you and your new friend - it will teach him/her that you are boss and not him - you can both get to know eachother, and gain trust in eachother.

I can say with complete conviction that getting a golden retriver is the best option!! Seriously, they are the most loyal, intelligent dogs, and they're just so beautiful. Personally, I'm an all round animal lover but i must say that often, if the chihuahua is not well-bread they can be very stupid. A friend of mine had one, but it was a horrible dog, and it ended up attacking a small child. Not that there's anything wrong with chihuahuas, I simply feel that unless you plan on having it trained properly, you're better off with the golden retriever. Or, maybe you could go down to the pound, and adopt a mutt. Often, they get a bad rap because they aren't "oure", but I've gotten all of my pets from animal shelters, and have never had any problems with them- they are incredibly loyal, affectionate, intelligent creatures and very loving. So, if you're feeling generous, give a home to an animal that really needs it. good luck, I hope this helps you! :)

These are very different dogs. I would pick the golden retriever because i like big dogs. I like to play rough with them, i like to give them big bear hugs, and i don't have to worry about stepping on them or accidentally hurting them. I think Golden retrievers are more mentally stable. I have met a lot of very nice chihuahuas, who have very cute personalities, but i have also met a lot of chihuahuas who have a BIG attitude. So i think as a first dog a golden is the better choice. But do you have the room for a golden? Do you have the time to take him on walks and exercise him? Chihuahuas can usually get all the exercise they need from just playing in the house, but goldens need more. Also talk to your parents about what kind of dog they want, because they have to live with the dog too. And if you are going to adopt from an animal shelter, you might not be able to find a pure breed dog, but there are a lot of GREAT mixed breeds that make wonderful pets. If you go visit your local shelter you might find one that you all fall in love with. You can go to http://www.petfinder.com/ to search for dogs who are in shelters in your area, and you can search for a specific breed you want. Good Luck finding your new dog. I'm glad your dad is allowing you to adopt one!!

Golden Retriever. But then, I really can't stand chihuahuas, so....

Just think about the differences (and between these two breeds, there are MANY).

GR's are generally more easy-going, and you can do more with them. They can be taken for long walks. Chihuahuas are small and can't be exercised as vigorously (a GR could go for a multiple mile walk, but I doubt a Chihuahua would make it very far).

GR's are better with children. Chihuahuas can be a bit snippy.

I just like larger dogs in general. I say, if you're going to get a dog, get a DOG....not a cat.

I have to agree with Alli, as well....mutts make wonderful pets. My dog is a lab/boxer/unknown mutt and he is so awesome:)

And the person who said you should get the GR if it's going to be an "outdoor dog" really irked me. NO DOG should be an outdoor dog. Dogs are pack animals and being left on their own can result in one unhappy, unbalanced, unhealthy dog.

Golden retrievers are great dogs. My daughter had 2, the older one who was 13 died recently. I loved them both. However my first love always was and alwats has been the chihuahua. My chihuahuas are not bippy little ankle biters. Some of my dogs love everyone that come in the house. Some are more standoffish. They are wonderful,. loving, sweet, cuddly, small, smart.

they both are great dogs. If you wanted a dog that will stay outside the golden, but a house dog then the chihahua. I have 3 chihahua and they are really good watch dogs also. It would be hard for me to choose I love both of them.

if i were you i would consider some things if you like traveling , live in a apt , & like sleeping with your pet ,then a chiwawa is the pet for you ...now if you live in a house , are an active person who likes running or playing sports , & are looking for a pet who will always be there then a golden retriever is 4 you ..... good luck

chihuahuas r cute (i have 2), but i don't recommend them. they r prolly the most vulnerable of any breed at getting sick. also, they aren't very friendly w/ strangers. i like to call them "ankle-biters". one of my chihuahuas had a stroke & multiple seizures & is now on meds for the rest of his life. the most they can do is run around & jump a little. if ur lookin for a dog that does "doggy" things, then a golden retriever is ur best bet. u should do a little research on the internet about both breeds, though. see what works for U.
