Read the attatched news story or simply read the headlines in yahoo News. Someone once told me in yahoo answers that the military does not recruit people with criminal histories... and ahem... that person is wrong!!! So, why is it ok for this to happen but an openly gay person must be booted. Having a felon in your platoon is certainly a good morale booster... wouldn't you say?

WASHINGTON - The Army and Marine Corps are letting in more recruits with criminal records, including some with felony convictions, reflecting the increased pressure of five years of war and its mounting casualties.

According to data compiled by the Defense Department, the number of Army and Marine recruits needing waivers for felonies and serious misdemeanors, including minor drug offenses, has grown since 2003. The Army granted more than double the number of waivers for felonies and misdemeanors in 2006 than it did in 2003. Some recruits may get more than one waiver.

The military routinely grants

Read the rest of my question... it isn't just about felons... there is more. And yea... people do deserve a second chance... but the military is disposing of arabic linguists due to sexual prefference, yet letting someone who has a hostory of drug use in... talk about stability and such?

ah.... but according to the news article that was on Yahoo news yesterday... the full piece to what I posted, they are letting people in who are considered felons... not just people comitted of misdemenour crimes. And no... the person did not tell me they were granting waivers... they said that the military did NOT recruit criminals, that it had extreemly high standards. And she was apparently someone of high rank in the service... go figure.

Ok... interesting answers but you guys are not reading the news story. They have said that people have been convicted of assault are even getting waivers now... and last time I checked, assault is considered a violent crime.

Felonis can be granted as waivers for non violent crimes. Any assualt with weapons are a no, (go figure) and domestic violence is automatic NO. Possession is the most common waiver granted, but not allowed for distrobution, trafficing, etc.

What it boils down to are patterns, and we look at the whole person, not just one event that may have happened. NON-violent crimes are what is waived. We do not allow in career criminals. Of course we only know what they have been caught at, not what they haven't.

Plenty of people who have records join the militray and serve honorably, you should be proud, and so should they, that one can get a wake up call and turntheir life around before they screw it up bad.

Of course, some people will answer that they are screwing it up joining. To those, shut up!! They chose this, don't pester them for there choice, just respect it and move on to your politics.

The US Army will allow waivers for people convicted of one "serious criminal offiense" as long as it is a non-violent crime.

Bear in mind, we use the AR 601-210, chapter 4, which covers criminal charges. It doesn't matter what the local government may consider a crime, we have our own standards.

Example - felony DUI in civilian town is a misdemeanor (serious offense) to the Army.

They used to MAKE felons join the miltary, and even then Gays were not allowed. Anyway, you still need a waiver to join so the person that told you that was right all along.

Well, I don't want to go to war, so if there is a criminal that wants to go for me, be my guest. And is that really true about kicking out homosexuals in the military? Because that's pretty gay. No pun intended.

People deserve a second chance. Gotta do something when you get out of jail.
