According to Catholic teaching, you're a sinner just for being born (you know the whole Eve/forbidden fruit/original sin thing).
Your situation is pretty indicative of organized religion. None of the sects within christianity can agree on how to interpret the bible, or how to worship god (hell, even 2 people in the same church will interpret it differently). The things that you were told by this person are that persons views. What do you think about it?
I'm inclined to tell you this: If you choose to follow the bible, or affiliate yourself with a church, do so because you want to. Allow your heart to dictate the way you believe, and not the words of others. You'll be much happier overall this way.
Personally, I don't believe in a god, so by nature, I don't believe in sin.

Hello Hitch
Before being a Christian you are a human. before a human you are the essence of God's creation, and before that also you are that God that is present yet not present in everyone, seen yet not seen, felt yet not felt.
I feel Bible was written almost 200 years after Christ. Yesu never wrote down his teachings. Imagine what Christ said and what was interpreted by his disciples must be different.
I say different because Christ spoke from the point of view of a Realized Master. What his disciples understood was from the point of view of people, people like you and me.
When we can't understand what our parents said how can we even understand what Christ said or teached???
And what was understood by his disciples was passed on to their disciples or friends and family...
It must have become distorted. Like grapevine...
So when Bible came into existence many facts and teaching must have been distorted, which over a period of time escalated.
I believe some things said in bible may be true but give it a thought. There were other realised masters like Jesus. They too knew what Jesus knew. They too achieved Enlightenment.
So other masters, other spiritual texts may also be having some authenticity...
Give it a thought. Study more, open your vistas...
Curiosity and study was never a sin and can never be.
when the exploring mind stops, the curiosity dies, spiritual progress ends.

Hmmm...basically, we're all sinners if we have ever sinned, even once. So that means we're all in the same hole, regardless of denomination, race, culture, etc. It is true that the Bible says we're are not to add or take away, because God's book is sacred, and if he allowed just anyone to change it, it would never be consistent, right? I believe how we choose to worship is our tribute to God, not a commandment telling us how to show our gratitude. BUT...God doesn't just call us sinners to make us feel horrible and guilty, he tells us so we can understand we need a redeemer. He offers his son to us, every single last one of us, to intercede for us since he has been the only sinless one to walk this earth. Once we have someone speaking to God on our behalf, then is when we begin to understand what holiness is. God is intrested in saving us, not condemning.

Not everyone can follow the bible, which is why God made us to make mistakes
That is why there is confession, cause everyone sins at times....
Also the bible can be opened to all different types of interpretation so how can one live by what the bible says, i think it is more as a guide of what is right
Oh yeah i was christened catholic

All people are sinners regardless of their religious preference. Christians use the Bible for their guidance but unfortunately the Bible is interpreted differently by each person who studies it and by each religion. As a Christian myself I am more concerned about my personal relationship with my God than I am about what a "church" teaches me to believe. He lets me know when I get out of bounds and it has nothing to do with what I was taught.

Yes it is!!......That is called LAWLESSNESS....disobedience of Gods Commandments, and in Gods eyes that is sin and the wages of sin is death....Despite the contradictory ideas and generalizations of organized religious denominations, your Bible clearly states: "Sin is the transgression of the law" (1 John 3:4 kjv). Sin is BREAKING GOD'S SPIRITUAL LAW--the Ten Commandments. That is definitely and specifically what sin is!.... Before God will forgive your past sins, you must first repent of breaking His law!...You must learn to fear and respect God as the Supreme Ruler of this universe--and as your King and Ruler.....God warned Israel against any form of idolatry. ..."You shall not make idols for yourselves; neither a carved image nor a sacred pillar shall you rear up yourselves; nor shall you set up an engraved stone in your land, to bow down to it; for I am the Lord your God" (Leviticus 26:1)........One of the most comon forms of modern idolatry is making an idol out of one's church or society. For many people, this world's society--its dictates, customs and traditions--becomes a literal god. Many people are desperately afraid of doing anything that might be regarded as different or "odd". They feel they must conform to this world and its ways. But God commands: "And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind" (Romans 12:2). This command must seem very hard to obey for people who get to thinking that other people must be right in what they think and say and practice. the Bible shows that many people in Jesus' day failed in their worship, for "they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God" (John 12:43). ........If you blindly obey the customs and traditions of your family , your church or society instead of the commands of the word of God, you are guilty of idolatry. That group or institution becomes an idol to you in place of the true God!.....Even ritual in a church service (lighting candles) may become dangerous, for however refined the ritual of some institutions may be, it begins and ends in the physical senses of human man--and is not a valid substitute for the true worship of God "in spirit". The Bible directly describes people of our day as "having a form of godliness, but denying its power" (2 timothy 3:5)..... That's what I think.
