He once joked me and him should have kids. He asked me what I do in my free time. He told me he like to solve people's problems and wanted me to open up. When he and I are alone, he's silent, looks at me for more than a few seconds, and smiles! Please tell me what is he trying to say?

He wants you, not surely know what for but he does, maybe he just havent found his opportunity and so he loses his moment. You turn him on and he most likely want to have a relatioship with you.
Here in Mexico we say "in betwen jokes, truth comes up" so listen to his jokes and they migth not be jokes at all even if both of you laugth. He migth think with some sex he can solve some of people problems wich sometimes works but take care.
Put things straigth to him and ask him what's going on.
