Val, We purchased a new four cylinder Camry in 04 it's been in the shop once for replacement of the knock sensor. It is still under factory warranty. We purchased the extra service agreement which covers every service the car needs as listed in the manual. Every 5,000 miles the tires are rotated and oil is changed. I opted for Mobil 1 full synthetic motor oil which I pay an extra $22.00. The car gets 35-36 mpg. on trips and 28 in town. I'm 6'4" and I personally have many issues with the area around the petals on the floor and position of the steering wheel. With the seat pushed back my 36" arms are stretched forward and it's uncomfortable. I think the designers forgot about telescoping steering columns 6" would do it for me. Normal sized people would find the car comfortable. We purchased the LE version. Slightly stiffer springs, re valved struts and larger diameter front and rear anti-roll bars and wider rims and 60 series tires. It handles much better than the SE version. Everybody has a preference how they want the suspension (ride) to feel.

I own an '03 Matrix with 70k miles on it. Never had a problem and it is a fantastic car. The vehicle was the start of the Matrix batch from Canada and there were no build problems. As a lifelong Toyota owner(Corona, Corolla FX, Camry) I have loved their build quality and the durability of the cars. Great gas mileage too! Disadvantages are none in my opinion unless you can not afford one but there are the Scion line and the Yaris now.

Camry is definitely better quality. You can probably get the Altima cheaper because of all the Altimas that are coming off rental fleets. I would recommend looking at a used 2006 Ford Fusion instead. At least it will still have some warranty. Any repairs needed on an '03 vehicle will be out-of-pocket for you.

My mom has a 2003, she likes it , has no complaints. I've driven it probably a total of 1000 miles. I have no complaints. It's not a stand out vehicle, it's popularity lies in the comfortable, easy ride it gives you.

Seats are very comfortable, engine has plenty of pep, you don't notice going over bumps, fuel economy is pretty good, cabin is silent cruising at 70mph, and she's only changed the oil on it so far.

One of the best cars on the road.. but do be aware that Toyota did have problems on some models in the early 2000s with oil sludge in the V6 engines.. No problems at all with the 4 cyl models...
