I am going to come into a small inheritance. I have had no car for eight years as I am on a fixed income and couln't afford to replace my car when it "died." I was thinking Toyota Corolla because of dependability and because my last car was a Celica and I loved it. Does anyone have any idea what I couldd buy for approximately &5,000. to $6,000.?

To answer the question, nothing was wrong with my '85 Celica except that the body was about to fall off! I gave it to a young guy I knew, and after he worked on it with Bondo, and sanders, and paint, etc., I wanted to cry! I've always wished I could have paid someone to do it for me. The milleage wasn't even that high. And thanks to everybody else so far that have been so helpful. I really appreciate it.

Suzuki Forenzas fall into that price range,
Everyone I know who has had a Suzuki has never had to replace their car, they last forever.
Get a new Forenza or similar and you will be happy.

Well if you are over 60, i would buy a good used SUV. Reason is it is EASY to get in and out, plenty of room and looks nice too. I had a 82 Celica GT and it is nice, but I drive my Ford Explorer now.
You would have to go to your local newspaper as car prices vary from state to state. Trucks in texas are more than say in New York city.
Do you still have your dead car. How much would it take to fix it. It might have been something simple unless you know.

get on autotrader.com u can do a price search and see what comes up. for that price u will find a car from around the year 2000 with about 100k miles. u might find an altima is the best deal in japanese cars. the only toyota might be an echo or slim chance of a corolla. good luck.

I would say a toyota is a good choice if your most interested in dependability. Honda civic's also are a good choice. They seem to run forever. However, most of them will have higher miles because they hold their value longer. I have a 2002 dodge intrepid and it's been a really good car. No problems. You can expect to get one with about 75,000 miles for about $6000.

When you find the car that you want to buy, even if you are buying it from a family member or your best Friend, be sure and take it to a mechanic shop and have a mechanic run test on it and check it out thoroughly. They will know what to do. It will probably cost around a $100.00 but it is well worth it. No excuses, take it to a mechanic before you buy it!

Check some of the local advertisements like the clasifieds or the car selling magazine "Auto Trader" and look for an ad for a car dealer who will go to auctions for you and only charge you a few hundred dollars over auction price for getting you a car. This way you can get a car worth close to loan value at close to dealer cost. When you find a reputable dealer who you feel comfortable with and can trust him/her ask them about your best choice for your needs. Most of them are more than willing to help, as they depend on their reputation.

Try a Kia, they may not be the best in the world but most of the time you can find one used with very low miles. Usually in the price range you're looking for. The best part is that on most Kia's the 100,000 mile warranty is fully transferable!

I would recommend a honda for a small car but if your looking for something bigger try toyota. They both rule the car market right now and put out superb cars.

Best bet is to go to cars.com and check out what's on offer. Toyotas and Nissans (even used ones) are very expensive compared to other used cars. I would guess that maybe a 3 year old compact (Focus, Neon, Cavalier) would be in your range.
