I can't believe that some people are questioning the "not old enough to adopt, but old enough to buy" thing here. They've never heard of shelters and pounds putting age restrictions on adoptions? I certainly have and, although I think it's a somewhat good idea, I also think it's detrimental to what they're attempting to accomplish. Potential adopters should be evaluated individually instead of discriminated against because of age. There are some irresponsible 40 year olds out there, and some very responsible 20 year olds. It's ridiculous.

That being said, you may not be old enough to buy from certain breeders, either. And buying from a pet store is not a good idea since the majority of those animals come from mills where they are bred solely for the purpose of profit instead of for the betterment of the breed.

Does your local animal control have an age restriction? Have you searched every shelter in your area in regards to age restriction? I have neighbors who are just 22 and 24, and they adopted two pits in the last few months from shelters without a problem at all. But perhaps the cut-off age is 21...I don't really know.

That being said, you might want to just wait a little while. If you find a place that requires you to be 21 before you can adopt....well, that's really not that long to wait:)

I don't where you live, but I have never heard that one had to be certain age to adopt from a local shelter! I do know, however, that you have to either own your own home, or if you rent, have your landlord's approval to have a pet on the premises. The rules at most shelters are pretty strict and rightly so.If nothing but a Yorkie will do, ( shelters don't always have the breed you want;they get what they get) then you should try and contact breed specific rescue organizations. Most, if not all, purebred dog clubs have breed rescues for their breed! Try the Yorkshire Terrier Parent Club (online) and do some homework on the breed first.See if they have rescue groups near you or if a rescued Yorkie is available...you may have to drive some distance to see, be interviewed & pick up the dog....Please don't go to a pet shop...overpriced, undersocialized and poorly bred dogs are all you will find, along with tons of heartache.Good luck to you.

You should be old enough to adopt a dog. At most shelters around here you only have to be 18. Some require you to be 21, but not all of them. Have you checked at your local animal shelters? If not, maybe you should wait until you are 21. I know it is hard, because I have 7 more months left on my lease at my appartment that doesn't allow pit bulls, and I am going crazy. After waiting 21 years, another 7 months feels like forever. But $1000 is a LOT of money for a dog. Maybe you can check your local paper for mixed breed puppies. Good Luck finding your new dog. I hope you find him soon, or are able to adopt!!

first ? to ask is ...do u have someone to take your collie/sheperd mix out to Potty" regularly? medical studies are very time consuming. Yorkies are terriers so they are tenacious and require/// rather demand a lot of attention. they own you and fully expect you to see to their every whim. if ya cant commit to this then maybe not right now. the other side is they will "cat litter train". but may trash the place with no companionship. if it gets along with her, it will insist upon being "alpha" dog. but usually they bond to people not other dogs, as they cant see to their needs. also what do u mean you are too young to adopt at age 20?

Age is a big question here as the others asked "Not old enough to adopt one but old enough to buy?" Hmmmm? Honestly check your shelters first for $$ and have an elder get em for ya

why dont you try a pound? Thousands of dogs that need homes can be found there, and usually, they will be so loyal to you since you rescued them. The are Much cheaper than 1000 bucks, and usually come with most of their first shots. Good Luck

If it's a good idea now, it will be a great idea when you are able to adopt one.
NO, at this point in your life, it's not worth it. You have school to pay for. Once you're established in your career, and have some extra money, then go for purebreed.
For now, I think you should wait to rescue one for less money.

Um, to my knowledge, you only need to be 18 to adopt a dog assuming the residence you live in are okay with it.

No matter how sweet your collie/shepard mix is, I advise you do not get a second female unless you can supervise them any time they are together..
