During rest period. When in use you tear the small fibers in your muscles when your rest they rebuild and rebuild larger. Of course this is a simplified explanation but hopefully it answers your question.

there are so many myths about muscles.....
the muscles grow when resting. during a workout session what you are actually doing is tearing the muscles just very small amounts. so when you go home and rest, the muscles repair themselves, except with more layers to prevent further tearing, thus the muscle grows larger. many people ask, 'is it better to drink protein before or after working out', and the correct answer is after, becasue thats when the muscles are using protein/amino acids to repair and rebuild themselves.

Yeah during the rest period cause they are actually damaged/strained during exercise. But more specifically, they grow while you sleep and so do all the other cells in your body (mitosis, or cell division only happens during sleep) so yeah for the sake of gettin buff get lots of sleep! =P

o, boy, during rest period of course, i am surprised someone doesn't know that yet. that's why it is not recommended to do weight lifting every day for the same muscles - u re just damaging them and do not give them time to recouperate and grow. they grow when they re recouperating after damage of work out
