I was listening to CNN and they reported that China is modernizing their military. Why would China want to do so and what are their intentions?

They want to see them selves as a Super Power equal to or greater than the US. In 20 or so years China will be able to project its power out side of Asia. Part of their build up could be a possible invasion of Taiwan, and if so they would probably have to contend with the US. Also, the build up could also be that at some point they want to project power over counties that have vital resources that China needs for its economy.

China is modernizing their military to project force as a world Super power which they will be one of these days both economically and militarily. They do have some enemies which include Russia to their north and India to their west and they do want Taiwan. As far as their intentions its hard to tell the only bright point is that in their history the Chinese have not been Territorial so hopefully in the future they wont want any extra land. They still consider Taiwan as theirs, so we either live with the fact or keep trying to counter them. The good thing is our military is much more advanced than theirs so hopefully the USA will keep our edge.

Because they don't know what else to do with all the interest on the loans we owe them? Because they don't know how else to spend all the WalMart slave labor proceeds? Or, is it becaus after Bush delivered our spy plane to them very early in his first term and allowed them to disassemble and re-assemble it (remember that??) they saw they needed to modernize?
Why wouldn't they modernize their military? Don't we? Or, are we the only people allowed to do that? As a military dependent, I've never been able to understand why only our country is to assert our rights, act unilaterally, bomb whomever we wish whenever we wish for whatever lies we're sold that month.
Interesting thing about the Chinese Army - the govt has instructed individual commands to make money using their state resources. People have bought naval cruises, complete with getting to fire heavy weapons. Some bases have converted their real estate into rents (how ironic!) and the soldiers are eating regular meals for the first time ever.
As Homer reassured Marge recently about her fears of Bart being recruited to join the military:
"Don't worry, honey. By the time Bart's old enough to enlist in the military, we'll control the world... We're China, right?"
Scary stuff - too bad we have such lousy 'leaders' right now leaving us unprepared for the looming challenge.

See China being Commies, they want to become more modern cause they are looking to make a move in the near future!!! We go on the defense people not the offense!!! We have never started a war against another country, we always went in retaliation toward a tyrant don't act like it isn't true and stop listening to the MAIN STREAM MEDIA!!! Even Vietnam was to help the south against the north!! Yes, we aren't going to waste money and not make off it in the long run or we would be pretty dang ignorant, wouldn't we? For Cassandra, you want to know why he might have let them see what the spy plane was all about? Well, look when CLINTON was in there, he sold CHINA all they needed to make their nuclear arms bigger and better(which is why he was actually on trial, thanks to MAIN STREAM MEDIA and MONICA to keep you in the dark of it all)!! So think he might have let them look it over cause it is the out dated version and we have even better out there and he was letting them know that they better not think about it cause we are up on them!! OH YEA, and for those loans, WE don't owe anything!! The past presidents owe that, that is their debt not OURS HONEY!!! I say let them pay them back and we would be out of debt!! If other countries get mad then we take it to them if they mess with us and not turn the past presidents into their pesonal prostitutes!!

They have the largest population and they are short on many resources. In the past several decades, the government has instituted a strict "one child" per couple policy. Most of those children have been boys. I hope they go for Muslim girls, because that's the only part of the world where there may be a surplus.

Some of the moderization makes sense. For instance they have 3,000 aircraft including prop planes in their airforce and they want to reduce the number for a smaller fleet of jet aircraft. Much of their equipment was bought from Russia and is old and outdated.

Why not. All superpowers have modern military. When was the last time you saw a battle fought with bows and arrows.

To get there military in better condition to fight/ defend there country just like every other country in the world.

Same reason why the US spends so much money on defense. They want to intervene in other countries for their economic gain.
