The best way to start playing/practicing volleyball is to get a volleyball and start bumping and setting against a wall. Learn the basics before you start worrying about spiking. A pair of shorts, t-shirt and some court shoes is all you need to start. Just practice against the wall, Serving, bumping and setting. A wall is better than a person cause you don't have to worry about the wall making any mistakes. Just repetition will be teh best way to start. good luck.

Get some knee pads -- the ones that look like a turtle shell are the best if you have never played before. They protect your knees the best. Be ready for practice. Get there early and get ahold of a ball. Hold it, get the feel of it. Bounce it on the floor, up in the air, against a wall (that isn't brick)...anything you can do to actively show the coach you are interested in learning and are ready to go. I have coached volleyball for 9 years and there is nothing I would rather see than a newcomer already touching a volleyball, with kneepads, ready to learn! Take a water bottle with you, and be ready to sweat! Keep a good attitude, and ask questions if you need to.

I played volleyball all through high school. It was fun! Enjoyed every minute of it... even the jammed fingers, and brused and ugly knees, dispite knee pads. I played to win! And I'm not on the least bit on the tall side. I played with a partner always on my right. She was taller than me... considerably taller. I was the setter... she was the spiker. All I remember was when I set that ball up in the right position for a spike, I hit the floor fast, to get out of the way. If you're trying out at school, likely (hopefully) they'll have the equip you need. If not, or you want your own... sometimes thats the case, try Academy or other sporting goods store. Good luck! I got my High School Letterman's jacket in Volleyball

One thing that I'll say is good luck! I just tried out for mine and I made it, even though I convinced myself that I wouldn't. You need kneepads. If you're more new, you'll need some ones that are a little thicker. Also, you'll see some people with volleyball socks, but you don't really need them. Find a place where you can practice, and have confidence! Remember to always have your eye on the ball too.
Good luck!

Hopefully, you have good jumping ability and decent height. If not, good luck. Work on how to hit the ball and how to spike the ball. Then work on serving. It is a pretty easy sport. Just pay attention to what other people are doing and follow how they are doing it. good luck
