I just joined a choir and it has really been getting my voice in shape! I have noticed that regular practice, with appropriate warm-ups, allows my true range to come out. My range has always been pretty wide, but without the regular practice and proper warm-up, I didn't always get out the notes that I wanted to get out, or at least, it was difficult for me to sing the very high notes for a long period of time without pain or difficulty.
If you don't know how to do vocal warm-ups, I recommend that you find a competent voice teacher who will train you to use your voice properly without damaging it. Enjoy singing!
