A heavy bottomed skillet will have better heat retention and is better for browning meats for a stew or before braising. The temperature will not drop as much when you add the cold pieces of meat.
An example of a heavy bottomed skillet is a cast iron skillet or a Le Creuset pan.
A "regular" skillet is the kind you can use to make scrambled eggs or crepes.
An example would be a T-Fal skillet.

a heavy bottomed skillet is just a skillet with a thicker bottom. The reason some recipes specify this kind of skillet is that it allows for more even heat distribution and therefore more even cooking.

A heavy iron skillet is always a heavy bottomed one,such a pan takes its own time heating up but then retains heat for a good lenght of time,most important is the fact that heat distribution is well spread out & even,the perfect utensil for frying evenly & browning to an excellent finish.

i tend to consider these a really thick frying pan -- such as a cast iron skillet. i think the key here is really to have it heat up gradually, and retain the heat over periods of time

Basically if you hold it in your hand and you think you could easily kock someone out with it then it probably is. If its light and you have doubts then its probably not.
