It depends on the child. They will ask questions or give you ques when they are ready. For my oldest two girls, it was when they were 7. I bought a really great series of books that were specifically designed for this purpose and this age. My youngest hasn't gotten there yet, but we'll talk when she let's us know she's ready whatever the age.

Children hear allot these days outside of home. If they hear the straight facts from you first, they are more likely to hold them as truth and not entertain the twisted things they may hear from other kids. But, they also need to be told that parents decide what their children should be told...it's not a topic children should "enlighten" other children about.

Kids are starting to have sex younger and younger these days. Where I live I have heard about 6th graders having sex. I think elementry age children are much too young to be talked to about this, but I think that when they get into middle school they should be taught the basics. And they should be taught precautions. I know that alot of parents get mad that some schools hand out condoms, but the bottom line is that if a kid decides to have sex then at least they have what they need to protect themselves.

Its a bit ridiculous. However, if you actually read about these new proposals, all they will be doing at age 5 is teaching the names of body part, how boys and girls are "different" and simple things like that, the more involved "sex" bit isn't until they are older. Given that the UK has the highest rate of teen pregnancy in Europe I think something has to be done but I'm not sure that sex education is the way to do it. We have to look at why these girls are getting pregnant - is it just because of ignorance (ie they genuinely don't know that unprotected sex can = pregnancy) or because of other reasons ie, the way having a baby is glamourised by the media and in some areas, girls from poor backgrounds who have little hope of having a career or progressing in life see pregnancy and motherhood as something to aspire to as soon as they can? Its more than just teaching kids where babies come from. And incidentally, several Infertility societies want young girls at school to be taught the dangers of "leaving it too late" to start a family because of the worry in the media about 30-somethings "waiting" to have a baby and then finding out they're infertile!!!
