Did anyone else see Richard Dawkins on CNN? I think he sums up my thoughts exactly? He couldn't have worded it better. If anyone missed it its in the Media section of www.pathofreason.com

I didn't know he was on CNN. I will watch it and be back with commentary...

I just watched and thought he did very well. His answers were respectful and intelligent and to the point. I just bought his new book today and am very excited about reading it.

I'm an atheist, and I think the fatal flaw in the atheist argument is that it doesn't offer a sufficient substitute for what most people seem to get from religion - AN EXCUSE TO BE WEAK.

Atheism requires a tremendous amount of logic, courage, accountability, responsibility, and strength from within. These are qualities that many, many people have trouble with as adults. The rampant problems which permeate our societies are proof of this.

Religion (at least Christianity) allows for a person to be illogical, to be cowardly, to be irresponsible, to be weak, to be evil, in a word to be FLAWED, with no real repercussions as long as they ask for forgiveness. In any other context, encouraging someone to live their life like this... to keep making mistakes and saying you are sorry, would be a recipe for disaster. It doesn't work in the workplace. It doesn't work in relationships. It doesn't work in the eyes of the law. It doesn't work in parenting. About the only place it does work, briefly, is in CHILDHOOD.

Because Christians claim this life isn't as important as the promised next life, they've essentially given themselves an all access pass to remain immature their entire lives. In other words, they get to be CHILDREN their entire lives, because they'll become adults when they die. Well, imagine what the world would be like if children never grew up, and you'd have a pretty good approximation of a planet where 90% of the population are RELIGIOUS.

Atheism would mean a world of ADULTS, and people simply aren't ready for that.

Yet.

Richard Dawkins is a courageous author. Some can say he is a revolutionary. His writings make me glad we have freedom of speech.
