I have osteoarthritis in my lower back, have had a disc fusion done in my neck 8 years ago and is starting to wear out, and have now been diagnosed with Impingement syndrome in my right shoulder. Unfortunately I have become dependent on pain killers to the point of being dangerous.
I am looking for alternatives to manage the pain. I live alone so no support from family is available.

I have osteo in my neck, and a friend of mine, who has rheumatoid introduced me to yoga. It's better than pain killers. For both of us, after awhile the pain killers stopped working, but became a habit of mind. Finally we discovered that yoga helps far more than pain killers.

Well, I've got some bad news for you. There isn't much of an alternative to this. You can try and switch meds to some strong NSAID's, or you can even try some neuropathy meds like gabapentin or lyrica. Fentanyl patches are also a really strong opiod (probably they strongest for pain relief) and they come in a patch, not in pills. All of these are good alternatives to the pain-killers you are on. If I knew more I could help you more, if you could e-mail me all the details I could fully help you. If you need more help e-mail me at supermankangaroo@yahoo.com Hope I can help!

Hi Suzy. Have you seen your family Chiropractor for all of these problems? If not, it is time to do so. For short-term pain relief you can use cryotherapy (an icepack). But it sounds like you need some serious treatment aimed at the CAUSES of your problems.

Best wishes and good luck.
