There are numerous references to anointing in the old testament and several in the new testament. The term anointing generally has one of three indications.

The first is of authorization. This would be is such a case as the reference of Luke 4:18 where in the conference of the priesthood had been granted and authority given to the disciples to officiate in priesthood ordinances and teach the gospel.

The second is that of the anointing with oil for the purpose of healing. This is done as a part of a priesthood blessing and while there is no mention of Christ having used oil in anointing, the disciples did as referenced in Mark 6:13 ad various other references.

Finally and probably the most common use is that of an indication of a pouring out of the spirit upon an individual. there are numerous references of this sort through out the bible. and indicates an acceptance of God.

The only explanation I can assume for the earlier answerer's assertion that the word does not appear in the New testament is that you spelled it with a double n rather than the common spelling of a singular n.

Best wishes and I hope I was of some help.

i am interested, since it is a term and a concept completely foreign to the NT.

no, it is not like the "rapture" which can be proven even though the word is not found in Scripture (same with the Trinity).

i'll stick around and read these answers.

EDIT 1: James (in reference to the wikipedia research below) uses the term for annoint which implies the application of medicine supplimented with prayer.

still no Scripture for this. if a woman deals with a baby that isn't hers and she has no experience with it...then she has natural ability...i noticed that you didn't say a CHRISTIAN woman. non Christians have plenty of natural abilities, but they are not children of God.

the true meaning of annointing: heresy that that has invaded our churches giving delusion of a second blessing that doesn't exist. it takes away from the power of God and it diminishes the true blessing of salvation. The giving of spiritual gifts is an amazing provision of the grace of God, but it is not some sort of mystical "annointing" that happens daily.

EDIT 2: the purpose of singing in a church or other 'religious' venue should never be to receive a response from people. it should always be for the glory and worship of the Lord. If you are not singing for that purpose, why would the Holy Spirit (whose ultimate purpose is to ensure that human beings DO glorifiy God) assist you? once again, this is experiential, faulty data that cannot be used to define or describe divinity or divine actions.

EDIT 3: in the OT priests and kings were annointed. in hebrews, we are told that we are made priests - all believers. so we are ONCE annointed by the Holy Spirit. This is not something that occurs over and over again. Samuel annointed Jesse's son ONCE. good point

EDIT 4: yes, i was wrong to condemn the word, as you can see in Edit 1, i do admit that it exists in Scripture, i should be more clear. however it only exists in the way of the Holy Spirit annointing when one is discussing the moment of salvation. it is not a constant or repeated event. instead, at the moment of salvation, the believer is indwelt by the Holy Spirit and given an inseparable bond with Jesus Christ. That is the annointing. There is no second, mystical blessing that follows. there is no Scriptural evidence of such a thing.

i am sorry for errantly stating that the word doesn't exist in Scripture - it is clear that i think it does. however, the idea is a heretical doctrine invented by charismatic and mystical christians.

the annointing is when the Holy Spirit annoints something or someone, to put his seal of approval. His power to preach or sing or to minister for the Lord.

My husband and I sing when the annointing is with us there is a power that is not of this world. And it minister to the ppl. When the annointing is not with us it is a failure and no one is touched or moved by the song.

I believe that you can describe it. When a new mom who has never taken care of a baby before, does it with natural abilitly it is because she is annointed to do that.

God's gifting to us is the same. It is "right" in our spirit. It is what we do that comes easily to us because of the Holy Spirit.
To annoint with oil is in remembrance of the Holy Spirit. But I believe that He annoints still today with His oil. The oil of gladness.

Can you describe the annointing feeling... that would be hard. Through prayer and ministry time, I believe that two Christians or more could teach that understanding.

Remember that God's people perish for lack of knowledge. Ask for wisdom to teach revelation for this.

This is the wikepedia version.

to anoint : To apply oil onto someone. When the ancients wanted to heal a wound, they poured or daubed oil onto it. Oil then became a symbol of God's healing powers, and anointment became a sign of trust that God heals. It is still a practice among some churches to anoint the sick with oil, as found in James 5:14-15. From there, oil became a symbol of other powers of God, and anointment became a ceremony marking the anointed person as being chosen or set aside to have special authority by God. The word 'Mashiach' or 'Messiah' refers to the ultimate One who was chosen to make the ultimate rescue of God's people; the Greek word for this is 'Christ'. The Christian holds that this Anointed One was Jesus of Nazareth. At baptism God 'anoints' each Christian with the Holy Spirit; we then belong to God. The Spirit then teaches us what is needed.

There is also a specialized use of the term 'anointing' by Pentecostal and Charismatic believers, an extension of the ceremonial use's meaning. When someone is said to be 'anointed', it means that the Spirit 'pours' onto them like oil -- that is, that person has been given special power by the Holy Spirit to work with the Spirit in accomplishing the task at hand. The 'anointed' person(s) or their activity is then said to be operating 'in the Spirit' and 'outside of themselves'.
