Because the love of money is the root of all evil. It is the manifestation of mammon and we cannot serve both God and mammon. Thus if we are focused on what we want and what we can get, we are not focused on the LOrd and are not serving Him.
Check out the book: Prosperity Doctrine: Truth or a Lie? You can find it on the website I have listed. It deals with this whole question.

I think you're lost a bit. You don't have any money or power or you wouldn't be asking the question.
The question you should be asking is: "How do I improve myself? How do I make more money? How do I gain more respect?"
The answer is age....wisdom....hard work....and good moral character.
Use the force luke.

Society makes it so. People do not have the wherewithal to become inner peaceful enough to allow themselves this comfort, so we pick power, money, things, to show we are better even if we are only trying to convince our self.

They have different reasons I suppose. I have never understood the desire, i have never had the desire for either. I think those of us that don't desire such things and know the true way of happiness are far better off. I know we are, for so many different reasons. Be happy that we don't understand them, be happy we are not that way.

Non-believers try to compensate by buying happiness. It doesn't work. When they die, their heirs son flitter it all away.
