My basset hound tries to eat kitty litter ALL THE TIME. I know the smell entices her but is there anything i can do to make the litter seem less appealing without having the need to hide the box.

First of all I recommend switching your litter if you are using clay litter.. because if your dog eats clay she can get really, really sick.. with a blockage, bentonite clay poisoning, dehydration etc. Clay litter is really bad if a dog eats it!! I suggest using Green(corn cob litter) Swheat Scoop(wheat litter) or another non-toxic litter just in case. Next I suggest a covered litter box, and put a chair or something else in front of the box so the cat can get through but the dog cant... and you may try using a product that is for coprophagia (poop eating) you can add it to your cats food and make it undesirable for the dog to eat. http://www.jefferspet.com/ssc/product.asp?CID=0&pf_id=11801

Unfortunately, this is completely normal for dogs. I always kept my cat box in a room which had a baby gate across the door. The cat could easily go over it, but the dogs couldn't.

Aside from keeping the dog out of the box, this also allows the cat a bit more privacy. Some cats will stop using a litter box if there's too much traffic in the immediate area. A big slobbery dog could definitely make it want to potty elsewhere.

You can buy no-chew from walmart or any petstore works wonders on stuff they don't need to touch and it won't affect your kitty unless he or she eats the litter too. You might want to block her from the box though to. Kitty may not aproove but it would help considerably. My brother's dog does this too. They call it eating kitty cookies.. They moved the box out into a room where the dogs weren't allowed and that the cat tends to stay in.

I think about the only thing you can do is hide the box from the dog. You might also look for a special cat box that's called "Clever Cat Box" which is remarkably like a rubbermaid tote with a hole in the lid. You can buy them online or at a specialty pet store sometimes.
