Which state?? Some states require a very definite answer to that question. A friend of mine has a concealed carry permit in New York; his reason was he works on a mental health unit and a number of patients have threatened him. Usually, who ever is asking, is looking for something more than "self protection". Do you carry large amounts of money? Do you do any kind of security or body guard work? Do you live and work in a high crime area? Any of those is an acceptable reason.

Target/Sporting uses and Protection
That's it. In states I know, you must have a carry permit to move a pistol anywhere outside your home (including to the gun club/range), so by saying target/sporting you are giving an un-debateable valid reason to issue the permit so you may move the pistol outside the home, and by saying protection you include your reason for having it concealed on your person.

It depends on the state. For a "shall-issue" jurisdiction you could put "personal protection" or "all lawful purposes". In a may-issue state you may need to elaborate, depending on your local sheriff or judge.
