What is the best floor for a 10X20 foot dog pen!! Gravel or concrete? How would you build a gravel base how deep and what the biggest rock you will start with? Help?

As a pet sitter, I care for 2 German Shepard's. The owner keeps them outside too. They have built a 7/12 foot high fence around the dogs, and they have a concrete floor. This makes it so much easier, as their pet sitter to clean up, it's cooling in the summer too. Also, they built 2 dog houses for them in side the caged fence(?), with plenty of bedding in the house, so the doggies stay warm. Also it is covered with a roof, probably not very expensive, maybe just tar, or that type of roof. Each dog has plenty of room to move about inside, and there is no chance of the dogs escaping, as they also have screen doors or maybe chicken wire made into doors, with outside locks, as well as inside. Simply a hook and eye type of lock. They also have a feeding stand for both dogs. The dogs get plenty of attention from everyone, and they seem very well adjusted to the living arrangements. So to answer your ?, CONCRETE.

Not gravel. It can tear at the dogs pads and then they can get infected and going un-noticed can cause a blood infection which then can cause more infections and eventually a really sick dog, a swollen leg, huge vet bill, and a large likley hood of death. Concrete would be ok but it's still rough on the pads. As long as its smooth concrete your good. In a concrete kennel it would be good to have a 25% portion at least (I suggest alot more than that though) in grass and in the house cedar or pine shavings. Always keep it sheltered under either a tarp or roof and ensure plenty of water. Kennels can be built on dirt though. Two of my kennels are. It makes no difference. Just the ground of the kennel is all cedar and pine shavings to make a warm place in the winter and dry in the rain.

Gravel, try 3-5 inch rock then top layers should be pea gravel, 3 or 4 inches of each layer should suffice

Concrete sucks mostly except that it is easy to clean, it will harms the dogs ankle, knees and legs

if you plan to build a pen or a dog run use concrete as this is the only way you can disinfect and insure that your dogs health is safe.use 1 part chlorine to 10 parts water when you rinse the incloser.good luck.ps your dogs nails will stay in trim also.

Concrete is best, but hot in summer and colder in winter. 1) inside or outside? 2) covered? 3) how many dogs? 4) $$ avail.? 5) in what area of U.S. // Pea gravel is great and cost less, but cleaning up is tougher! umm cedar chips help cover oder and sand is good but again clean up is sifting. Your choice after you answer all other questions!

Concrete because they cant dig out of it and its also easier to clean up their poop and pee. If you have gravel they are just basically lying in it all the time.
