Pernicious anemia is a disease where you have the inability to absorb vitamin B12 due to the lack of Intrinsic Factor, which is usually produced in the stomach by certain cells of the lining of that organ. Usually, it is due to an antibody that leads to disruption of the cells. When you have a depletion of the B12 level, it can lead to fatigue because of the anemia that ensues. B12 deficiency also leads to certain neuropathies such as pain or numbness that starts in the extremities. Severe cases can lead to confusion and encephalopathy. Because the problem is in gastrointestinal absorption, simply taking supplements is usually not enough. Injectional B12 may be necessary.

Pernicious anemia is anemia that is caused by the body'e inability to assimilate vitamin B12 in the stomach and without this the body will not absorb iron therefore the person becomes anemic. It is very common in older persons. If left untreated it can cause dementia, senility, confusion, tiredness, muscle aches and pains, insomnia, irritability and many more symptoms. The treatment is to have a B-12 injection once a month and eat iron rich foods for the rest of your life. This treatment is the best there is and a person can take a suppliment of vit B-12 sublingual since it is not absorbed in the stomach. Though they should discuss this with their Dr. beforehand. If left untreated and senility and dementia sets in it may continue without change though treatment is given. So it is very important to get the shot and live a normal life. This is one reason all people should get a physical every year and have blood work done to pick up on this condition before it becomes permanent.
