Hi Sonjee--cool name by the way--If you can find a color correction specialist, it won't take more than one visit. What we usu. do is get the color back to a base color and then throw in some high-lights. That's the easiest way, but it depends on what you want and how multi-toned ur hair is now. If u have a lot of orange u either hafta bring those pieces back up to match the others, or go as dark as u can to neutralize the tone. As ur hair grows out, the initial correction color will fade as well-which then makes it even easier to just keep adding fewer & fewer high-lights or whatever. U could be more specific so we know exactly what color you want to get rid of.

My response to your question will likely disappoint you. Though hairdressers and cosmetics vendors would like you to believe otherwise, in general the chemicals used to dye hair are damaging to the structural integrity of the hair shaft. Information you may collect on this matter from those with a vested interest will probably tell you that dying hair is a harmless process. You would probably get closer to the truth if you were to pose your question to a reputable dermatologist. Hair dye may add artificial pigment by a process of oxidation, or it remove natural pigment , called reduction, from the hair. When professional hairdresser, uses this process, the damage is very minimum, almost nothing. When the hair is damaged above 30%, the damage becomes more noticeable. More chemical, more damage.

There is hair color stripper that you can purchase. I have seen it at Wal-Mart in the hair color section.
I will tell you that it is hard on your hair so make sure that you use a good, deep conditioner.
You may have to do it a couple of times, depending on how dark your hair is and how light you want it to be, but it can be done.
Oh, and a box is about $8 or so.

If it was a semi permanent die, It should wash out within 6-10 shampoos. So I would keep washing my hair regularly and allow the color to fade away. If it was permanent I DEFINETLY recomend that you go to a stylist and have the color professionaly lifted. Otherwise you could end up with an "at-home-disaster". Take this from a woman who watched my best friend at fourteen go from a brunette, to blonde, to booger GREEN in about 2wks trying to fix an at home color mistake. Once she got to the stylist, there was really nothing she could do about it. Sometimes the stylist only actually has ONE chance to fix what was messed up, and if you take that away at home, then well...you may have to walk around with green, pink, or orange hair. PLEASE contact your nearest CERTIFIED stylist.

Go to a professional and have them lift your color. If it is a lot of color and you have light hair and it's dark dye, it will be a tedious and relatively pricey project. But you shouldn't attempt to be a "kitchen beautician" for a color correction. It's normal if your stylist asks you to come in a few times for the complete look.

You can buy kits at the store that won't take the color out of your hair but they take the chemicals out so you can recolor. If you really dislike the color on your hair now this might be a good option.
