Witchcraft is neither "white" nor "black" -- it's a technique, like prayer.

Witchcraft 101 would go something like this, at least as I was taught: All things in the universe are interconnected by energy, which some witches (including Wiccans) perceive as Divine in nature. This is how witchcraft works: by focussing my intent, and using sympathetic correspondances (certain herbs for courage, for example), I can create an amulet using those herbs which will stimulate courage in the person who wears it. Similarly, by using a lock of hair from a person who is ill, I can (with their permission) set energies in motion that will help them to heal.

As a Wiccan, I operate by the Wiccan Rede: "If you harm none, do what you will". I also operate by the Law of Threefold Return: "Whatever you do, for good or ill, comes back upon you three times over." To me, this is one of the most important things to keep in mind about witchcraft: It is NOT a game, or a toy. It is a serious process of setting energies in motion, some of them quite large. And if you're not careful, the backlash can be very nasty.

Say, for example, you do a spell to get $2000 to pay a bill, but do not specify "with harm to none" or any other conditions. You might end up getting that $2000 dollars -- because your beloved Aunt Betty has died, and left you that amount of money in her will. Each spell has to be carefully thought out and prepared, and executed with focus, or else nothing at all is going to happen.

Witchcraft is not something you learn how to do overnight. It's a process of becoming attuned to yourself and the universe around you. One of the first lessons I was taught as a Wiccan was: "Know thyself." This isn't easy, and often it isn't pretty, but it IS necessary.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to email me.

EDITED TO ADD: In response to Sarah's post... sorry, but Wiccans do not worship Satan. We have no figure equivalent to Satan in our belief system. Generally speaking, Wiccans worship the Gracious Goddess, the Mother of all life Whose love is poured forth upon the earth. No sacrificing of animals, no curses, no honoring of diabolically dark forces. We work in harmony with the Divine energy we perceive as manifest in nature.

A relatively objective (non-Wiccan) guide to what Wiccans do and believe:

Witchcraft is honestly whatever you make it. If you constantly put curses on people (esp undeserving people), you probably won't feel many positive repercussions. But you can also practice witchcraft by feeling the energies in stones, communing with the wind against your skin, clearing bad energies from people you care about.
It's also important to remember that witchcraft has no religion. There are Christian witches, secular witches, satanic witches, Wiccan witches, you name it. So if your grandmother is using religion as a way to deter you from witchcraft, just keep in mind that you can apply witchcraft to literally any religion or non religion. It's your choice.

Okay, most REAL witches (those not educated by silver ravenwolf) will tell you there's not really any such thing as white or black magic. Those are terms that were put to it to define good and bad magic. The problem with these labels is that magic is not good or bad, it is the will and intent of the caster that makes the difference. As for the white queen in narnia; that story was written by a man who was very christian and very anti-magic (read the magician's nephew which is the first installment of the chronicles of narnia and you'll understand a bit better). I wouldn't use that particular story as a frame of reference. Lord of the Rings (the book, not the movies) are a bit better when it comes to explinations of magic. You might look into that.

Witchcraft isn't "white" or "black" - it's a tool. It's the intent of the caster that determines whether it's "good" or "bad"/"white" or "black".

My first question is - why do you want to "get into it"? What are you looking for? A quick fix to all your problems? It won't happen. A way to make people "do things" like fall in love or give you what you want? Doesn't work that way. A deeper connection to something larger than yourself? That's closer to the truth.

You may want to look at "A Witch Alone" by Marian Green.

There is no such thing as white witchcraft. Witchcraft and spells are used with the intent of the spellcaster. If you use your magick for good, then nothing but goodness will come out of it. If you use it for selfish gains, then you will set yourself up for a fall. We witches live by a rule- do what you will as long as it hurts noone. Hope you find what you are looking for!

I'm pretty critical of it as a religion, but it sounds like you should just look into Wicca. It might be hard to find a practicing group, but there are plenty of books and resources available.

You might also look into finding a Unitarian Universalist Church, or possibly a Unity church near you. I believe both have members who are either Wiccans or other "Nature Based" religous followers.

Personally, I think there isn't much in those beliefs, but I hope you find what you want and need.

There is really no such distinction between the types of magick. Energy is neutral. What is good for one may be good for another.

American Witches (capitalize it, it's a religion) do not harm other people with the Art.

The only danger withe Christians getting involved in magick is that it will change your worldview to the point where you will see Christianity for the farce that it is. This can cause you to reject it. It takes a strong person to reject the mainstream religion of their family and culture.

There are two sources of power GOD and satan. According to The Bible, witchcraft is of the devil (satan). Thus witches were to be put to death. Exodus 22:18
IF you really want to help people you could start by helping people with things they need help with.... doing the dishes, carrying out the trash, doing the laundry, cooking a meal, watching younger children, helping them with their homework....become a nurse, doctor, therapist.... With God all things are possible.... GOD performed miracles through Jesus, Stephen and Paul...etc. IF you give GOD complete control of your life maybe someday HE will perform miracles through you as well.

OK, first, read about the lives of famous occultists:

http://usminc.org/famous.html

It's obvious they didn't have magic powers.

If there is any truth to the old saying "Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach.", that truth is found in the occult, and Wicca in particular. Silver Ravenwolf has written close to a dozen books on the subject of "The Craft", and claims she has been studying it since about 1969, which is almost as long as I’ve been alive. She has written a book on how to cast money spells, and includes a chapter on how to do so in her Teen Witch book. But the thing is, she doesn't particularly sound all that prosperous herself. Ravenwolf writes,

" For years I couldn't afford to go to a hair stylist (still can't, it's shop and chop for me). I got pretty good at stying my own hair from looking at magazine pictures" [SOURCE: Teen Witch, Llewellyn Publications, 2003 edition, page 145]

OK, she so rich she can't go to the hairdresser. Hey, get me a copy of that Prosperity Spell book!

Silver Ravenwolf seems to have inadvertently discovered that Wicca makes things worse, but won't ever admit it as such.
In Teen Witch she says

"A lot of people tell me how bad their lives have gotten after casting a spell and tell me they won't do Witchcraft anymore. I tell them their lives would have been much worse for not having cast the spell".

Gee Silver, you would think a lot of people would be saying things like "Hey, Silver Ravenwolf, my life has improved tremendously with Wicca!" if Wicca is as great as they claim. Instead it makes lives much worse, and even Silver Ravenwolf admits she hears this a lot!!!

Why? Because sometimes, things are just as you think they are. Most average people will tell you the occult deals with black magic and demons, and demons are evil beings who wish us harm. This is how it is my friend. The occult is evil, and brings bad happenings into a person's life, and Wicca is an occult religion. When you stop trying to rationalize it with inaccurate data and just use common sense you will realize this. Some occultists are of above average intelligence, and I think part of the problem is they have book smarts but not common sense. There are two forces at work in this universe: the counterfeit and the genuine. Wicca’s source of power is not the genuine. There’s just simply no way Wicca (and thus the copycat Neopagan religions) can be created from the black magic writings of “The Great Beast 666", the bizarre sexual practices of Gardner, the spiritual “guidance” of the Watchers (fallen angels) and still be a source of good!

Wicca was started by Gerald Gardner in New Forrest England circa 1950. He was a nudist & masochist and basically created Wicca as a sex cult. Followers nowadays like to forget that part, and instead fantasize they have magical powers.

Adian Kelly wrote a book on the history of Wicca called "Crafting The Art of Magic" in the 1980's. Wiccans had a fit when it was published, and pressured Llewyllyn to take it out of print. It was supposed to be the first in a series of books. I think Adian Kelly probably summed it up best when he said this about the Gardnerian "Book of Shadows", the closest thing Wicca has to a sacred book:

" [M]any of the Book of Shadows rituals did not exist in 1954 (when Witchcraft Today was published) but instead were still being written. [T]he major sources from which the rituals had been constructed included: (a) Mather's edition of the Greater Key of Solomon; (b) Aleister Crowley's Magic in Theory and Practice; (c) Leland's Aradia (d) some Masonic rituals akin to those described by Duncan and those of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn (aside from those transmitted by Crowley; and (e) Margaret Murray's The Witch Cult in Western Europe. There were also bits and pieces from other works by Leland, Jane E. Harrison, Gilbert Murray, James Frazier, and other great classicists from the 19th century. That accounted for EVERYTHING in the rituals! There was nothing left that differed in any important way from what you can find in those sources- - but that is NOT at all what Gardner had claimed!"

You should first examine your motives, the Craft is not to be entered into lightly. If you are looking for a toy to play with, look elsewhere. I've been a witch for 8 yrs. now, I could help you, but only if you tell me what, specifically, you are interested in. Other than that, I can only refer you to www.witchvox.com or some other such site.EDIT: You should also listen to the others when they tell you that labels like "white" and "black" do not apply to this particular subject. It is all in the heart of the witch, magic itself is a tool.
