I am now ashamed to admit it but when I was a young hippie one of my friends dropped too much acid and took me to my first Pentecostal Church and we were the only white people in there. I was high on the weed myself at the time and the preacher came over to me and put his hand on my head, rocking me back and forth, sweating and speaking in tongues and I was so freaked out by the whole thing I started laughing my a** off I was actually very scared and paranoid at that moment) and the congregation thought I was being filled with the Holy Spirit!!! I've been to other Charismatic churches as an adult and although I think a lot of the "tongues" are contrived I do enjoy "babbling" in the privacy of my own prayers because sometimes you just can't think of the words you want to say to God. I avoid religion like the plague now, though, because NO ONE has it right but they all think they do and most are really divisive.

As I'm from a pentecostal church....I'd have to say NO.
But speaking in tongues during the service isn't often a corporate thing....mostly it's personal and each of us individually pray in tongues. When it is a loud corporate thing it is one person at a time with the interpretation also given and no more than three messages and they usually align and say something similar. (that is also the way the apostle Paul said it should be).

I had the opportunity to sit next to a Pentecostal Pastor from Georgia a few weeks ago and he explained this "speaking in tongues". It is my understanding that when someone speaks in tongues, there is always someone their to translate, and It is a sign that they are experiencing the holly spirit. The Pentecostal experience may be defined as seeking and receiving the gift of speaking in tongues as a sign of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. In turn, that Baptism may be defined as the dwelling of the Holy Spirit in the individual believer. From this flows the other gifts of the Holy Spirit. The gifts include healing, prophecy, knowledge unattainable by natural means, and discernment of spirits (awareness of nonphysical beings such as angels and demons).. I don't think you should put other religions down, especially when you know nothing about it...

talking in tongues, as you witnessed it, is between the presents of the Spirit. the guy talking would not comprehend the language they're talking; that's a supernatural present. it is no longer gibberish, yet a actual language. As a Pentecostal, and a linguist, I even have on social accumulating heard human beings talking in tongues who have been talking languages I recognized and/or understood, yet i be conscious of those human beings had no organic know-how of those languages. the potential to communicate an unknown language is given via the Holy Ghost, and is no longer some thing to be nervous of.

Speaking in tongues does not happen today. It was a Biblical gift bestowed on the early Apostles and disciples.
"Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away." 1 Corinthians 13: 8
On other note to consider. You have to look at the original definition of tongues in certain verses. Speaking in tongues in some cases was just another language that others in the room could understand.
Speaking in tongues in the way that some practice today is pretty useless since no one understands them. The are just nonsense babbling.

I was raised a Fundamentalist Christian, and was essentially forced into attending a Pentecostal church. Quite frankly, the speaking in tongues thing scared the hell out of me (pun not intended).

No. I was fascinated the first time I heard someone speak in tongues. After that, I began to ask God for my own "prayer language" and actually received my own. I only use my prayer language when I am alone or very quietly during worship. I find it quite beautiful.
