I'm thinking of going on a cheap trip to South America and I was interested in Ecuador. Does the dollar go far? If so, what are some things that are cheap? Also, how much do common things cost on average. For example, gas on average costs ______, cigarettes cost _____. I'm just trying to get an idea of whether or not I can afford the trip. Thanks a lot!!!

The dollar went pretty far when I was there 2000-2001. I have no idea about the gas, but a pack of cigarettes was around 80 cents.

Other approximates I recall:

Decent dinner: $3
City bus: 24 cents
Taxi trip: $1-4
Night out at the bar: $15
Monthly rent: $100

I'm sure everything went up, but probably not so much.

Why "the US dollar?" Wouldn't you change it to pesos, and then see how far they go??
