Linux is an operating system. Other operating systems you might be familiar with are Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, and DOS. Linux comes in many different flavors, some are used in small embedded devices like GPS systems for cars, shopping carts, or wireless routers. Other flavors are used for large server operating systems clustering over many computers.

Lately Linux has been gaining in popularity as an operating system for personal computers. While its been possible to use Linux as such for years, recent innovations in usability and user friendliness in some flavors have led to many more people using Linux. One such flavor is Ubuntu. Ubuntu lists the fact that Microsoft Windows is the dominant operating system for personal computers as Bug #1. As such individuals involved with its development seek to fix Bug #1. One of the prime features that separates Linux from other operating systems is that it is free as in beer (there is no cost to purchase it) and free as in speech (if you are a programmer you can freely modify and redistribute the source code).

Unfortunately, a lot of people are prejudiced against LINUX because they probably used it years ago when it was not suited to the average computer user. LINUX is now very user friendly.

There are many free LINUX operating that are just as easy to use as Microsoft or MAC. They have a graphical user interface (GUI). You can download and run them from a CD to see if you like it. My favorite is UBUNTU.

In addition you get all of the programs that you will ever need FREE!!!

It's an Operating System, similar to Windows or Mac OS.

There are hundreds of derivatives of it as it is an Open Source Operating System, meaning that anyone can add functionality to it for themselves. Hence, you'll find so many different names of Linux. i.e. SUSE, Red Hat, Debian, Ubuntu, etc. etc.

If you're considering moving across to Linux, be advised that although great inroads have been made in recent years to user ease, it's still not as easy to use as Windows or Mac OS.
