I heard once that it's harmful. Is that true?

I'm talking about CANNED fruit out of a can. Not an individual piece of fruit.

Well, it depends on what you mean by a dent. Say you have an apple that was fine at the store when you picked it out and then it got a dent in it on the way home and you eat it, there might be a slight bruise near the dent area, but it won't hurt you. I tend not to pick fruit that has dents personally. If the fruit is just deformed though, I'd stay away, but that's just personal preference.

*update* I misread the question...why would a dented can have anything to do with the fruit inside? It's fine. Eat it.

Before the cans were made out of tin and not coated on the inside and sterilized, so there was the possiblity of air entering through the dent causing internal oxidation which would poison the food.
But with the new process that is used it is very unlikely that it would contaminate because of a dent.
That is why discount stores like Grocery Outlet or 99 stores will sell the product

Yes --UNLESS it is dented on a seam (side or top) A dent on a seam make let air in but if not on a seam probably is ok unless you can actually see leakage.

Fruit would most likely only have a mold if really dented too much. It would not kill you. Not a botulism product because of the pH.

Canned fruit that is dented means the stockboy was careless.

If the can is bulging, it's dangerous. That means bacteria is growing inside and excess gas is forming.

NO! Only eat what is inside of the dented can, not the can itself. Unless you are a billy goat.

i think that it depends on how bad the dent is. i dont think that it would be harmful unless their is a puncture in the dent. but if their isnt i do not think it would be of any harm.

If the dent goes in, yes. If the can is bulging outward, no.

The can could possibly contain Botulism. DO NOT EAT IT. Botulism is a extremely dangerous microorganism, that can possibly kill you.
