if your form is proper resistance training will not cause injury it increases muscle, tendon and ligament tensile strength which is the opposite.

could also just be from getting older, etc. try dropping the weight by 25% and see how that feels.

You may have irritated the joint. Tendons and ligaments are more delecate than most of us realize. Yes, you should lay off the squats for a couple weeks and treat the knee with applications of heat for twenty minutes twice a day. When you resume your squats, start with a much lighter weight for two weeks. If you don't experience pain, increase the weight very gradually - say by five pounds a week - until you're back to your 160 lb. If you experience a repeat of the pain, best find another means of exercise. If it's important to your career, you may need to see an orthopedic surgeon to determine whether you've done serious damage to the joint or whether a course of physical therapy would help.

Doing squats and deadlifts with a lot of weight is a great way to tear up a knee. If it feels funny it very well be that you tore something like a meniscus. If you did resting will not make any difference except that it will prevent any further damage. If you knee gets sore, or begins to ache and lock up then there is some damage and only an MRI will reveal it.

Well I would take it easy for a while, if you still have problems with it then you might have fluid leakage, or the cartilage (found between bones and joints. Looks like rubber keeps bones from grinding on each other) might have slipped and that usually feels funny at first, but later on you will start having real bad problems with it. I hope this is not the case with you though, but if it's take care of it ASAP.

definately lay off it at least temporarily.
get one of the trainers at your gym to check your technique, if your knee is going past your ankle you can injure your knee, and it's not fun!
