luke 8
2One day Jesus said to his disciples, "Let's go over to the other side of the lake." So they got into a boat and set out. 23As they sailed, he fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger.
24The disciples went and woke him, saying, "Master, Master, we're going to drown!"
He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm. 25"Where is your faith?" he asked his disciples.
In fear and amazement they asked one another, "Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him."

Luke 8:22 Now it came to pass on a certain day, that he went into a ship with his disciples: and he said unto them, Let us go over unto the other side of the lake. And they launched forth.
23 But as they sailed he fell asleep: and there came down a storm of wind on the lake; and they were filled with water, and were in jeopardy.
24 And they came to him, and awoke him, saying, Master, master, we perish. Then he arose, and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water: and they ceased, and there was a calm.
25 And he said unto them, Where is your faith? And they being afraid wondered, saying one to another, What manner of man is this! for he commandeth even the winds and water, and they obey him.
"What manner of man is this," is what they actually said, being translated of course.
edit:
to Lori, Jesus was the only person to have ever commanded the waves and the wind and they obeyed him. Peter and Paul were his apostles and they did miracles. Both of Peter and Paul raised people from the dead.

If the disciples believed in Jesus, why were they always in fear and amazement? Something about that story just doesn't sound right. Actually, there is no other documentation of anyone doing that.

In order to be spiritual master, Jesus had to have transcended the material world. He had command of the material world, including the material nature. This is one of the qualities of spiritual master. Anyone who claims to be spiritual master, but cannot exhibit mastery over the material elements is a pretender. Right now, there is a rascal claiming to be God in India, named Satya Sai Baba, and he is very skillful in magic tricks, but he has no mastery. Jesus was qualified master, and exhibited those qualities for the benefit of his disciples. Some christians accept Paul or Peter as authority, but they were not master, so their words are not acceptable.

I think this passage demonstrates the command and power our Lord has over everything that He created. Also I think He wanted to show His disciples that they should have believed that no harm could come to them as long as they were with Him.

It is only one of Jesus' many miracles that HE performed. There were a number of them that were documented by the Apostles in the New Testament. HE was the MESSIAH and that was expected of HIM to show everyone exactly WHO HE WAS! I thank GOD each and every day that I was led to HIM. Have a great evening.

I don't think Jesus needed to take any meteorology classes. Not if he has the power to call the shots.

This is probably a good thing, as no university offered it back then.

This is one of the most assuring passages containg a promise for protection and care found in the Gospels. In fact, you might want to read the devotionals found at the following site: http://www.gracerestoration.org/dailydev/default.htm under the title of "Promises of God". There are several of them that center around these verses.

I think it's amazing for two reasons. First of all, His ability to command the wind is awesome, but also his ability to sleep through that kind of storm.

I think it shows that He is who He says He is...even the seas and winds obey Him, as all of creation will one day! Our choice, you can confess Him as Christ the Lord now of your own free will, but one day all willbe compelled to do so.
