I prefer the smooth blades. Here are the advantages:
-Can be hand-sharpened
-Produces a cleaner, more precise cut (Are scalpels serrated? No.)
-If it needs to be used in combat, a sharp smooth blade will cut veins and leave them open. A serrated blade will collapse the veins, and the enemy won't bleed out nearly as fast.
-Easier to maintan
A serrated blade, on the other hand, can act as a handy little saw. It cuts through thick wood and plastic much faster, though not as good for whittling. It can only really be sharpened with a specialized machine that's impractical to own. For buying a cheap blade, however, a serrated will usually be sharper. But if you're going to buy a nice knife I still reccomend a smooth blade.

Smooth. Easier to sharpen and can make a cleaner cut. A serrated blade acts like a saw and is not as sharp.

Serrated blades cut rope better. Smooth blades carve solid materials better. Just go with whichever you think will serve you best. I carry a semi-serrated blade which is good for just about anything.

I prefer a plain edge for general use. Partially serrated is the worst of both worlds, IMO. Serrated blades (preferably fully serrated) have their specialized uses, like with rope or cardboard.

i can do anything a serrated blade can do with a good sharp smooth blade. note i said sharp. serrated blades will work better dull than a smooth blade on some things [rope, cardboard] but with both sharp i much prefer a smooth blade. they are more controlable and easier to sharpen.

Which is better depends on what it is for.
thin long serrated is better for cutting bread. Smooth for carving turkey.
Short smooth jack knife for carving wood or whittling, short fat serrated for skinning an animal or use in hand to hand killing.

it actual relies upon on what style of use the knife is for. when you're speaking a wide-spread camp knife, I have a tendency to carry my in part serrated blade. It provides the finest of both worlds. And opposite to a distinct human being's submit, you could sharpen a serrated blade with the most ideal kit. seem in a Cabala's catalog or pass to Gander Mountain.

Which is better depends on what you are using the knife on. serrated is best on bread and tomatoes for example. Smooth is best on meats, and cheese, and firm vegetables.
