Find somebody in your hometown that makes really cheap cakes. There has to be one of those ladies in every hometown you know the one that everybody gets there birthday cakes from or makes everything at school. But if not then you could ask how much it is to just decorate a fake cake kind of thing for pictures and then the baker makes a sheet cake and keeps it in the kitchen and puts white buttercream icing and serves that to everybody. Nobody will ever know the difference. Just don't make the fake cake too decorative. The more details their are means that it is more time consuming and the more time it takes means the more it's going to cost you. It's an idea. And the cupcakes are a good ideas too. Do them yourself or get a bunch of aunts and cousins and bridesmaids to help decorate. It will be fun.

Once you get over the stigma you might want to try Walmart's bakery or the bakery of a large chain grocery store. They have very good cakes & wonderful decorators.
You could also go with a smaller wedding cake & get sheet cakes as the same kind your wedding cake is. In fact, I know of some that get a wedding cake with two of the layers fake & only one real; the one they cut. They go the sheet cake route as well. No one ever knows the difference and it's soooo much cheaper.

Cupcakes are a great idea, and trendy. You can arrange them in levels like a tiered cake. Just make sure the base is sturdy enough to hold them.
Check with your local supermarket. Many do wedding cakes at a reasonable price. Having a talented friend or family member bake the cake is another option. Doesn't have to be fancy, you can keep the cake simple and decorate it with flowers.
If you decide to go the bakery route, make sure to ask about a party cake, don't mention wedding at first. Vendors hear wedding and the cost is premium.

Simple, yet really creative ideas for 'wedding cakes.' I saw in a magazine, was more themed for a summer wedding, but really awesome at the same time. Go get premade angel food cakes at the store (probably about 3-7$) a cake, or make them yourself (with help of wedding party and family) and they can be frozen by the way to preserve until wedding, and I saw in the magazine the angel food cakes were topped with simple fruit, strawberries, blueberries, kiwi, each had different colors of fruits and layouts, they were so simply yet really neat looking. Good luck!

I know it's been said but try look into having Wal-Mart's bakery do a plain cake in how many ever tiers you are thinking of having. If you are into flowers, you can either purchase fresh or silk flowers, cut the stems off and decorate the cake yourself. If this is something that you would like to consider, search the web for examples of "floral cakes" to get an idea to work by. Hope this helps!

There are several options you can do. You can purchase a small pretty cake for your cake cutting ceremony and have the guests served from sheet cakes (very cost effective) that are cutted and plated in the kitchen. You can purchase your cake from a grocery store or bulk food store (Costco, Sams Club) which tend to be cheaper than traditional bakeries. Or you can have a cup cake tower instead of a regular cake.

First, you're not going to want to try and make it yourself, you'll have enough on your plate. If you have a reliable friend who can do it, great. If you want a specific bakery cake this corner can still be cut....
Make a simple stacked cake (pyramid style), tiers are also possible here. Have the decorator just ice and border it. (If an inexperienced decorator is doing it, don't bother smoothing it much and let it have a...less polished look, it can look just as good) Speak to your florist and have them make a floral piece that will adorn the cake or just get some loose matching flowers--it shouldn't cost much if anything, choose a modest cake topper--if any.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
OR, get some inexpensive sheet cakes from a grocery bakery, decorated to match or leave blank (just border and accents)..possibly add fresh flowers on each.
Then make or order one small 6 or 8" cake...(can hold cake topper, flowers, champagne glasses, decorative rings, wedding favor, initial plaque etc.)Place amidst the sheet cakes, possibly on a traditional tier or wide vase with colored or clear pebbles inside, or shiny ribbon, the possibilities are endless. connect the cakes with ribbon or inexpensive gauzy fabric to bring the look all together.

Go to your local grocery store's bakery. We got our cake in the shape that we wanted, with the type of design we wanted, and an extra sheet cake (incase we ran out) to feed 200 people. The cost was over $150 less than a cake from a friend who makes cakes, and her cake was only going to feed 100 people! Just compare costs and you'll find the right one!

Ask around for local people that do cakes out of their home..I know of 3 people in our town. This will probably be word of mouth, as they usually don't advertise.. My daughter did this and saved lots of $$...She paid $350.00 and had several cakes on pedestals with flowers on top...it was beautiful... The lady had picture album of cakes she has done. She even served and decorated the cake table too. Keep looking and good luck !!!

IF you dont like the idea of sheet cakes, do you have a Publix grocery store in your area? They make beautiful wedding cakes, are reasonably priced, and will deliver and set it up for you as well.
