Technically, dogs do not have periods, but they go into "heat" or "season." sseson anywhere rom 6 to 12 months of age, depending on the breed.
.Females go into heat about every 6 months. and the heat cycle lasts for 21days.
The heat cycle of the female dog has three parts and lasts about 3 weeks.
The first part lasts anywhere from 3-14 days during which a bloody discharge and swelling of the vaginal area are usually seen.
Next the dog will become receptive to being bred and actively may seek out a male dog. This is the time when she can become pregnant. The discharge may change color at this time and become lighter.
Finally, the discharge will become clearer, the vaginal swelling will diminish and the dog will no longer allow herself to be bred.
While your dog is in heat you must watch her carefully to avoid unwanted breeding and subsequent puppies. If you are not planning on breeding your dog, please have her spayed to help prevent unwanted puppiesIt I will also lower her risk to several types of cancer.

A female dog first goes through heat between 6 months and 9 months. Usually closer to 6 months. It is important to note that when a dog has a visual discharge is when it can get pregnant. Going through heat is not a sign that a dog is not pregnant but that it can get pregnant.

I am told that a young female puppy can start her period anytime after seven months of age and usually before her first birthday she'll have had at least one heat cycle.

When I was stationed in MA, the Boat Crew wanted a Ship's Dog. Not a good Idea. They got a Female Lab. Nice dog, but a real pain to clean up after.
The Commanding Officer kept taking her home with him when we were in port. (I think he was using her to attract dates. Poor Slob.) Anyway, he had white furniture in his apartment. Needless-to-say, when she came of age, he had red spotts all over his furniture. I LMFAO.
She was neutered real quickly after that.
