Maybe everyone else around you has more deducted. You can't look at your refund to see whether you're paying more than others.

It's exactly like if you and a friend go to a store and buy an identical item, but you pay with a $10 bill and he pays with a $50 bill. He gets a lot more change. Doesn't mean he got a better deal! He just got more of his own money back.

Maybe the people around you have more taxes taken out of their checks. Maybe they have more deductions than you. Maybe they just make more money. Thing is, when you do your taxes, ideally you don't want to owe but you don't want a big refund. A big refund means you've payed too much in taxes over the year and, in effect, loaned the government money and you get 0% interest for it. It is better to keep that money yourself. Then you can either spend it on things you need or invest it and earn interest.

Use tax software, that is all the tax preparers use.

Readup on the deductions so you know to lookoutfor them. This timeof yuear they are often pointed out in newspapers and periodicals.

The biggest refund are usually the result of mortgageinterest and property taxes, that could be a big part of what your friends get back so much.

TURBO TAX! It's under $40. H&R Block will cost you over $100 and I wouldn't trust them or even send my enemy to them.
