ok 1 way is to open your start menu, look for the startup folder, and delete any shortcuts in it. That keeps some programs from starting with the computer, but some dont place a shortcut there. So you have to open the programs individually and change the preferences so they dont run at startup, such as yahoo and msn messenger.

I don't really understand your question...
Do you want to remove software list when you click on (start)?
Or you want to stop software to launch on the start up.
If it's the first it's pretty simple (click right , property, personlize, put 0
in the list of recent softare open)
If it's 2.
This is a bit more complex but simple at the same time.
follow this step (it will also make your start up very more fast)
- Click Start
- Click execute
Write msconfig
go in the right section (start up)
Choose the case (the software) you want to have on the start up.
ATTENTION don't unable your firewall or anti-virus.
You can unselect everything. (you can open the software after the start up without problem) but don't unselect your antivirus or firewall unless you want to lauch it manually,
Hope it help!
Good Luck!

I use the program "Chameleon Startup Manager" for it.
You can find it here:
http://www.neosoft-tools.com/windows-startup-manager.htm
It disables any startup programs and fully controls startup by selecting the programs to be launched, while customizing the startup settings (ie how often and when programs should be launched, etc).

Either find their preferences and tell them not to, or edit AUTOEXEC.bat, prolly not a smart idea if you don't know what your doing
