Stroke is usually suspected based on clinical findings and confirmed with imaging (CT, MRI, angiography).

Usually it's done by a Dr. and not a lay person. They use diagnostic imaging maybe, of the brain or they can do cognitive testing of the memory to see if there are defecits and use that as a way of telling if something happened. The person may be at risk for a big stroke so they must be taken to a Dr. They can put them on medication to possibly prevent another one that may take their voice, their ability to walk and much more. Get them to a Dr. tom. please.

The very obvious is slurred speech, partial or total paralysis on one side of the body, drooling out of one corner of the mouth.

Is one side of your face numb? If so, this is a possible sign. Can you smile normally, where both corners of your mouth turn up? If not, this is another sign of stroke. Do you have normal use of both arms and both legs? All of these things are signs of stroke. Good luck.
