United Way is probably the most prominent, since many people see their presentations at work.

Ronald McDonald House is the first one I ever knew of. They advertise on the McDonald playground.
St. Vincent de Paul is the most common household name if you are Catholic in the US.
Salvation Army is pretty commonly known for their thrift stores. If I have clothes I don't need, it's the first place I think of.
Here's a new one that I hope becomes a household name: www.kiva.org
It's a great microloan program for those in 3rd world countries. It the only microloan prgram I know that allows you to choose the person you will loan, too, and keep in touch with their progress through their journal entries. I highly recommend it.
