Was he weaned normally? I ask this becuase I've had kittens who were taken from their mother too soon and they are not taught hygene matters. For them I've used a warm wet wash cloth and wiped their hind ends to teach them to clean. Usually after a few days of this they get the hang of it and you can leave them alone.

My kitten had the same problem until 3 weeks ago. I don't know if this is the best method, but I used to wet kitchen towel and dab his butt, when it's wet he licks it clean. He seems to get the point and clean up ok, now, without me helping.

Not unless you want to show him by example . . .
There are kitty wipes you can buy to clean his butt, if it is annoying you.
Otherwise, his cleaning habits will improve with age. Some are just slower than others. Give your kitty the benefit of the doubt. Help him out by wiping the butt for him with the wipes to begin with.

At 4 months old were you cleaning your butt? Help the little guy out. He will eventually get to his butt.

it might want to be an elementary instinct ultimately. Your kitty might want to be too small or no longer strong adequate to stretch that some distance for that lengthy yet. although, i do not recognize your kitty so i'd be thoroughly incorrect. in case you get a humid toddler wash textile and gently end cleansing him with it after he thinks he's performed it might want to help. the textile should be hard adequate to experience like a mommy cat's tongue, yet delicate adequate to no longer rub the oil out of your kittens fur. And in case you do it after he thinks he's performed he ought to with any success ultimately keep in mind that there continues to be more desirable to be wiped clean. His kitty mom might want to end cleansing him if he did not recognize a thanks to do the finished pastime, so now that you're his new mommy you want to assist him out. Your kitten sounds stunning. sturdy success!

My little girl kitty was so little at that age when she tried to clean her bottom she would just end up doing a summersault..so I just used a wet paper towel and that helped as she got a little bigger she quit rolling over and she does a wonderful job keeping herself clean now.

I doubt the odor is because he doesn't clean it. It's more likely that he either needs to be dewormed, or is not tolerating his current diet well. Try a lamb and rice or sensitive stomach kitten food, and have a stool sample checked at the vet to check for parasites.

I had that problem with a kitten I got who was too young to be away from his mom. Here's what I did: Clean it for him. They tend to tire of this very quickly and learn what to do to prevent you from doing that to them.
