Have you poured oil and water in a container before? If no, then pls try. As you can see, oil will tend to float, except for mercury.
Therefore, water should have greater mass than oil.

The mass can be calculated by knowing the density of the fluid. As the density is defined as mass per unit volume. As you have stated that volume is constant. It is quite clear that now the denominator of the term is constant.i.e. 1 Liter.
Now the density of water is 62.4 pounds per cubic feet. If you know the type of oil. try to find its density from any fluid mechanics guide, then make a comparison. Denser oils are heavier than water, just because of this reason.

It has to do with density. The density of water is 1gm/cm^3 and i'm not sure what kind of oil you are talking about but cooking oil density is ~.918g/cm^3. The higher the density the heavier the object by the definition of density which is the mass per unit volume. Examples are copper =~9g/cm^3 and air is about 0.001293g/cm^3. Hope this helps.

Water has the greater mass. This can be established through deductive reasoning. Since density is the relationship of mass per unit of volume, and because the volume of each liquid is equal, and since oil floats on the surface of water due to the fact that it is less dense, then any given volume of water must have a greater weight than the same volume of oil.

1L of oil = approximately 0.8kg (relative density = 0.8)
Oil floats on water (exxon valdes) and is therefore lighter.

you have equal volumns of oil and water, place each container on a balance and you will see that water weighs more than oil.
f=ma
Force(weight) = Mass x Acceleration(gravity)
Since gravity is a constant and is in equal effect on both containers then the heavier container (water) has the greater mass.
