If you live in Colorado, then your out of luck. It could have 8 inches of snow out and the schools stay open! But if you live in Georgia, then yes. They are wusses down there. They get out for a week if that happens.

It's a judgment call by the school district and is partially due to the part of the country you live in. In the northern and New England states it is unlikely that freezing rain would close schools unless accompanied by a blizzard that kept the salt trucks from being able to get on the roads.
Here in Texas we are not prepared for very cold weather and certainly not for snow. We've already had one day called for freezing rain. The risk of accidents by bus drivers who are inexperienced in driving in this kind of weather also has something to do with it. Interestingly, the decision to close was not made until 5:30am the morning of....one reason is that even if the temperature is below freezing and rain is falling, the ground is usually warm enough that the rain does not freeze on the ground.

Freezing rain would not normally be bad enough to close schools, but it really depends on the area. I went to school in Colorado. A few times I waited for the school bus standing in knee-deep snow in 20 below zero temperatures. However, if Florida or a state with similar had freezing rains, they might close schools. Florida drivers are not used to driving on ice, so it would be dangerous.

No, freezing rain is not enough to close school. A lot of times, the salt trucks can keep the roads free from the ice, so they will still be safe to drive on in the morning.

It depends where you live. If you live in Georgia, freezing rain would probably close the schools. If you live in Canada, no one would think twice about leaving the schools open.

That all depends on your school's superintendent. S/he's in charge of that decision. My county's schools are closed due to freezing rain. You probably live around my area.

It depends on where you live, and how bad the icing is. If you get over 1/4" of icing, you can bet that school will be cancelled.
