after the engine warms up, it jerks only when i give it a little gas and hold it steady. if i give it a good amount of foot, it's fine and gets out like a champ. after this starts up and i idle at a stoplight, it surges up from 1000 to almost 2000 rpm and i have to really stay on the brake to keep it from jumping out. what's the deal?

It kinda sounds like your Throttle Positioning Sensor (TPS) is going wacko on you. My '94 GC Limited acted the same way till I replaced it.

could be a vacuum leak. check your vacuum hoses around your intake, look for small holes, a pinched line, disconnected?
