That is both bad and common news.

A Farang (foreigner) cannot own land in Thailand legally.

BUT Thai lawyers and agents will tell you that you can, and the government here knows all about that.

Worse than the bloody Nigeria scam it is.

The Thai government is fully aware of such illegal and unethical "sales' of land to foreigners and by doing nothing about it actually encourage the practice.

Nobody here gets prosecuted (except the foreigners). Nobody even gets charged when this, very common, ripoff occurs.

So, the big wigs in the govt. in Thailand know and about this AND both directly and indirectly they profit from this.

So, forget the cops, the lawyers, the govt, they will just take more of YOUR money then.

Just bite the bullet.

Your brother lost his money and broke his heart and that is really bad. But he will never, ever get any compensation from either the Thai family involved or the cops/govt.

Welcome to the land of smiles.

Oh, I forgot to mention that I have lived here for over ten years, I am a foreigner and I would not buy land here if you paid me to do so. Rent or lease is safe. Purchase is fatal.

Well, not sure what your question is... Your brother must be quite gullible... but that is not what you want to hear.. I am uncertain as to the amount of the loss, but he cannot buy property in his own name, so I assume that is a loss too...

I have a Thai wife and have bought a house and furniture as well. When I bought this, I was perfectly aware of the fact that if things go wrong, it will be all hers.. Which is what happened to me in USA as well.. - - after 18 years w/the same lady -- I have been w/my thai wife for 5 years.. - so, at least I have had some use of the house and furniture.. so, fully aware, if things go wrong, it will all be a gift to her - I looked at it this way from day one - in other words - - this is life and he should have known beforehand.. Let me guess, this lady was how many years younger than he??

As to the Thai police, I would doubt that they have any interest.. the only thing that doesn't make sense to me is why she took the furniture and just didn't change the lock and not allow him back in.. this is not the first such story that any of us have heard here..

I am sorry to hear about what has happened to your brother. Here is how this generally works. If your brothers g/f was a) on the contract and/ deed or b) has a key to the property then it is not considered theft. As long as she can prove that she had permission to be on the grounds she can remove or bring anything in or off the property that she wants. Unless your brother can prove that the items that were bought were not hers and that she actually has possession of the items, he can go to the police with that information but generally the police wont do anything. The only other option he has is to take her to small claims court and try to either A) get the property back or B) get the money back for the items that she took along with any kind of damage that there may be.

tom are you not the same person who wrote about the legal age for sex in thailand? now you live in thailand? I feel sorry for your brother and have seen many cases like this. Don't know what your question is. but since you live here you should know the system. Farang will very seldom win a case in a court with a thai person dealing with money. Let the buyer beware.

Hi, sorry to hear that. What is the relationship between your brother and his Thai girlfriend now? Can he work out something with her? Come to an agreement with her? It looks like she is the way to resolve the matter.
