Many of the people's answers I have seen are referring to 1 Corinthians 6:19...the "Temple of the body" verse. However, when we look at the context of this verse, the meaning changes. All examples are from the New International Version of the Bible:
1 Corinthians 6:18-20
Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits are outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.
Here, we see that this verse is dealing with sexual sins. Not with smoking tobacco. I actually believe that smoking is NOT a sin from a much earlier verse in Genesis:
Genesis 1:29
Then God said, "I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it."
Hmm....tobacco is a plant...and God is "giving" the plants to us. Also:
Genesis 9:3
Everything that lives and moves will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything.
Although God is speaking of plants for food, this could be interpreted as being acceptable for any use of plants.
Also, I noticed someone say that one of the commandments is "Thou shalt not kill". This is false:
Exodus 20:13 "You shall not murder."
Although most versions of the 10 commandments will say "kill", it is referring to "kill wickedly", or murder. Otherwise, every single soldier that has served the US and had to kill the enemy would be going to Hell.
In conclusion, it is my belief that smoking is NOT a sin.

We are called to obey man's law so underage smoking is a sign of rebellion and therefore a sin.
But, I do not believe smoking is a sin. Though you are right harming the body God gave you is not treating his temple with respect. To honor God you should do your best to take care of it in all aspects of it but I would still avoid calling it a sin or else every obese person is a sinner and in rebellion.

I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ LDS. It is a sin for the members of our church to smoke. Anything harm full to the body that God has gave us is a sin for us to do. I also think the sin is somewhat less for those who have never been told the truth than for those of us that have the truth. When much is given much is expected, many are called but few are chosen. I think you truly hear the call listen to your heart and you will be rightly guided by the light of Christ and with prayer you can have the Holy Ghost to help guide you also.

Let me reason with you.
Is it that we are striving to become sinless by our own effort? Or is it that we keep our eyes on Jesus? It's his Spirit that keeps us growing in him. It's not the works that we do that are of ourselves, it's those works that we do the he brings us to do.
So you may strive to remain a non smoker, so for you it is a sin. You have made it a part of your faith. But if someone else is not moved to do so, then it is not a sin to them. Such a sin would be a sin of conscience. So your Dad is not sinning, it is not interfering with his walk of faith, so leave him alone about it. That would be respectful.

Well, the apostle Paul said that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, which belongs to God, and one should not destroy God's temple. Paul also said that one should not be enslaved (addicted) to anything, because that is worshiping a false god.
You are also supposed to honor your Father, so don't fight, just remind him respectfully.

"Is smoking cigarettes a sin?" that's in case you think of that's. God does not enhance us all to be the comparable. the belief lined out in Romans 14 applies, i think of. "you're quite poisoning your self, so does smoking cigarettes classify under suicide?" that's in case you think of that's. to three it would be a sin of ethical sense. people who think of, "you won't be in a position to be a Christian and _____." To me, they are announcing that they'd't be a Christian and ____. What they propose is that all and sundry won't be in a position to be a Christian and ____. yet generally people who locate themselves incapable of being Christian and ____ would desire to make all and sundry else stay via the comparable rules. they are Legalists in my e book, and that i think of Paul observed them via fact the "vulnerable" in Romans 14. "Or is it a sin via fact your physique could be a 'temple' of varieties?" our bodies are poisoned from the beginning up. we are death even with each thing. So i'd be "poisoned" despite if I smoked or no longer. death human beings are already poisoned, it is not any longer organic for people to die. death is something that got here after Adam grew to become into created. It grew to become into imposed on him. " will this habit be a sole reason so which you are able to be considered a 'goat' extremely than a 'sheep'?" i think it is attainable for somebody to have that difficulty. yet in no way all individuals. back, if the ethical sense is against smoking, then mutually as they smoke they are thinking that they're going to Hell for it. so they are residing interior the certainty they are persuaded in direction of which states to them in my view that they are committing a grave sin. i'd tell any such individual that they'd desire to provide up in a rush, via fact of their ideas they are committing insurrection against God. yet, as Romans 14 states, they'd desire to no longer decide others for ____. and people who do ____ shouldn't decide others for no longer ____.

The Bible tells us not to defile our bodies...it also tells us that we need to respect life...smoking defiles the body and kills, so smoking is indeed a sin and it shows a blatant disrespect for life.

Just stupid and a sign of weakness. My grandma died of lung cancer. What does make me giggle are those Christians who condemn those suffering from clinical depression who kill themselves because of the illness, but are perfectly mentally healthy smokers.
