I find it ironic and somewhat sickening that such a genre exists, because it connotates that you are only worshipping God when you are singing. Also, the level of effort and skill put in by a lot of the musicians is astonishingly low, even though we are supposed to be doing things to the "best of our abilities". There are some talented guys out there, but they are few and far between.

David Crowder has some decent stuff in the genre, though. I just hate the genre's name.

By the way, I'm starting a Christian band, and here are some lyrics that I have written:

Diamond Calling

Chorus:
Come into this Diamond Kingdom
Here you’ll find a higher way
Step out of your dying failure
That moths and rust will tear away

Come into this Diamond Kingdom
Once you’re here, your debts are paid
Inside here you’ll find your freedom,
The strength to finally break your chains

Verse 1:
Onward, onward through destruction
We must die until we live
Through the fires of our perfection
Offer all we have to give

Cast our sins to the righteous explosion
Drown our lust in the torrents of flame
Come, inferno, our conviction,
Till our twisted minds you tame

Verse 2:
Scripture burns away our sin
The crucible of Heaven’s will
Empty hands take up the cross,
Flaming with our Christ instilled

Sacrificial pyres of Heaven,
Dead, we find our life anew
Men on fire with their redemption
Cannot help but speak the truth

Verse 3:

Transform us for holy blessing
Call us out from earthen graves
Worthless ‘till we hear the message:
Jesus Christ has come to save

Anyhow, I just thought I'd share that with you =)

I don't think there are any "best". There are only favorites. It's an individual thing. Some of the golden oldies are extraordinary. Some of the contemporary ones are great too. I find it important for the song to have a message in it about Jesus Christ. It's alright for some of them to be focussed on how I feel about God, or how I am looking to Him, but in general, I prefer them to be focussed on Him rather than on my feelings.
The last 20 years or so seem to have been really rich in production of worship songs. The Vineyard church has been really productive in this way and has blessed us with contemporary Christian songs.

One of my all time favorite's is Ancient of Days.

Every tongue in heaven and earth shall declare your glory
Every knee will bow at your throne.. and worship
You will be exalted Oh God
And your kingdom shall not pass away...
Oh Ancient of Days..

flutes play, hands clap, children dance.

I love "Undignified" by the David Crowder band. It was a little loud and little irreverent - but now even our older church members are clapping and swaying. Lalalala!
